Southern Cone: Uruguay Presents an Interesting Fact About Electric Vehicles

According to the latest report from the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade), Uruguay ranks as the sixth country in total electric vehicles, with 5,950 units in circulation. This places it behind Brazil (152,493), Mexico (36,887), Costa Rica (17,903), Colombia (14,407), and Chile (6,184).

However, when analyzing electric vehicles per capita, Uruguay stands out in second place with 17.4 units per 10,000 inhabitants, surpassed only by Costa Rica, which leads with 34.3 units.

Uruguay has approved fiscal benefits, including exemption from the Imesi tax and the Global Tariff Rate, as well as a reduced vehicle registration fee set at 2.25% of the vehicle’s value.
Additionally, discounts of 50% to 100% on electricity rates for charging vehicles have been introduced.

Initiatives like Energy Efficiency Certificates (CEE) and incentives for clean technologies have also played a pivotal role in this growth.
