In a recent meeting, Spain and Portugal reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the construction of the Madrid-Lisbon High-Speed Rail Line and improving the Vigo-Porto railway connection.
The meeting was attended by Spain’s Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, and his Portuguese counterpart, Hugo Espírito Santo.
Both nations agreed to continue working on the Madrid-Lisbon line, building upon the recent signing of the European Commission’s Implementation Decision regarding this cross-border connection.

This bilateral framework aims to ensure system interoperability, covering aspects such as electrification, as well as signaling and control systems.
Details of the Connection
This reflects the shared interest of Spain and Portugal in enhancing their railway infrastructure, promoting greater integration and sustainable connectivity across the Iberian Peninsula.
However, regarding the Vigo-Porto connection, the importance of improving this route was highlighted to strengthen territorial cohesion and foster economic development in the region.
Despite the stated intentions, no significant progress has been made on this project. Nevertheless, the realization of these projects will require detailed planning and continuous collaboration between both countries.
