European Union and SCIT Sign Letter of Intent for a Sustainable Railway System in Mexico

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and the European Union (EU) signed a letter of intent aimed at promoting a long-term public policy for the development of the Mexican Railway System, seeking to position it as an efficient and sustainable transportation option.

SICT’s goal is to make the Mexican Railway System the leading intermodal and multimodal transportation mode in the country, for freight, passengers, and mixed services alike.

Its approach focuses on public benefit through the optimization, improvement, development, operation, and maintenance of the system. The letter of intent is part of the European Union’s global strategy, Global Gateway, which aims to promote a green, digital, and inclusive transition.

Through the Global Gateway Investment Agenda, investments will be facilitated for sustainable projects in key sectors in Mexico, such as sustainable, inclusive, safe, and smart transportation.

Engineer Manuel Gómez Parra, Director General of Railway and Multimodal Development at SICT, and Ms. Myriam Ferrán, Deputy Director General for International Partnerships of the European Commission, were responsible for signing the letter of intent.
