The Potential of Colombia in Electric Mobility

Colombia has a favorable environment to become a leader in electric mobility in Latin America. Its energy matrix, primarily based on hydraulic sources, offers a competitive advantage by ensuring a low carbon footprint in electricity generation.

Additionally, Bogotá and Medellín have already begun paving the way with electrification programs in public transportation, featuring operational fleets of electric buses.

The Colombian market is showing sustained growth in the adoption of electric vehicles. According to figures from Andemos, the sales of these vehicles more than doubled in the last year, driven by tax incentives and exemptions on tolls and traffic restrictions.

Law 1964 of 2019 promotes the use of electric vehicles, playing a key role in structuring a clear and accessible regulatory framework for citizens.

Colombia: Sustainable Mobility

Colombia is also positioning itself as a potential hub for the production of components for electric mobility. The country has resources such as nickel and copper, which are essential for the manufacture of batteries and electric motors.

Moreover, Boyacá has the potential for the responsible mining of strategic materials, which would strengthen Colombia’s integration into the global value chain.

However, Colombia’s leadership in electric mobility will depend on collaboration among the public, private, and academic sectors, as well as promoting events that highlight this reality, such as those organized by Latam Mobility.

In addition, the Electric Route of the Andean Region and alliances with international organizations demonstrate a commitment to advancing this transition. Ultimately, this scenario makes it clear that electric mobility in Colombia is not just a goal but an opportunity to transform its infrastructure and economy.
