These are ALD Automotive | LeasePlan’s Tips for Safe Driving during the Christmas Holidays

ALD Automotive | LeasePlan published a series of recommendations for all drivers to contribute, from responsibility, to make the roads safer during the Christmas holidays.

The beginning of the last month of the year marks the season of Christmas celebrations and, with them, the roads are filled with drivers heading out to share special moments with friends, family and co-workers.

Combat fatigue: The long and continuous meetings and after-dinner meals during this month can contribute to fatigue symptoms, which are a significant risk factor.

In this regard, before driving it is important to get enough rest and, once behind the wheel, it is essential to make short stops to stretch your legs and clear your head.

Moderate the consumption of large meals. During celebrations it is common to enjoy large meals; however, it is essential to avoid excesses before driving, since the digestion of this type of meals may cause drowsiness, thus affecting concentration at the wheel.

Avoid consumption of certain foods. There are foods that can negatively affect driving ability and contribute to increase fatigue and lack of attention. Therefore, and although it is certainly complicated, especially at this time of the year, it is important to avoid heavy meals, with a lot of fat or rich in sugars before getting behind the wheel.

Driving Safety

Zero alcohol at the wheel: Before driving, the consumption of alcohol and any type of narcotic substance is prohibited.

Caution with anti-flu and other medicines: During the winter season, colds, flus and other illnesses associated with the cold are frequent and involve the use of medicines.

It is of vital importance to read the package leaflets carefully to be aware of side effects such as drowsiness or others that affect the ability to drive.

In addition to these symptoms of fatigue, it is important for drivers to acquire basic safety habits:

  • Do not use the phone: Beyond fines, it is important to avoid using the cell phone while driving, since distractions are one of the main causes of accidents at the wheel.
  • Use of seat belts: They should be used by all occupants of the vehicle. It is essential to prevent injuries in case of an accident. Seat belts save lives.

Other aspects are essential to stay safe during the holidays, such as checking the vehicle. It is important to ensure that the car is in optimal conditions, checking tires, brakes, lights, etc., especially for this time of the year when adverse weather conditions can affect driving.
