Toyota Opens Exclusive Electric Vehicle Production Line in Japan

Japanese automaker Toyota is taking a major step in its electrification journey with the launch of its first exclusive production line for electric vehicles.

The new facility, located at the Takaoka plant in Japan, is set to begin operations in fall 2025 with an estimated capacity of 100,000 units per year.

This new production line will initially focus on manufacturing the Toyota BZ4X, a fully electric SUV aimed at the European market.

With this move, the company strengthens its infrastructure for Toyota electric vehicles, providing a separate space to improve efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs.

Takaoka currently has two active production lines. One will now shift entirely to electric vehicles, while the other will continue its standard operations.

The dedicated EV line is expected to leverage economies of scale, enabling more competitive pricing.

Global competitiveness and new battery assembly

Toyota is also planning to expand the electric lineup produced at Takaoka and build a battery assembly line within the same plant.

This aligns with the company’s efforts to respond to an increasingly competitive EV market dominated by players like BYD and Tesla.

The Toyota bZ4X, launched in 2022, is Toyota’s first mass-produced electric vehicle. Previously built alongside hybrids at the Motomachi plant, its high production costs limited expansion. The shift to a dedicated EV line marks a strategic move to streamline operations.

Scaling up in North America

In the United States, Toyota has partnered with LG Energy Solution to produce battery modules. The facility will have an annual capacity of 20 GWh—enough to power approximately 400,000 Toyota electric vehicles per year. This partnership will support the brand’s growing EV presence in North America.

Toyota also introduced a new EV lineup for Europe in recent weeks, featuring three models aimed at expanding the company’s footprint in the global zero-emissions market.

Accelerating the transition

In 2024, Toyota saw a 30% growth in global EV sales, totaling 140,000 units. However, this still lags behind competitors like BYD (1.75 million units) and Tesla (1.79 million units).

The new developments aim to close that gap and enhance Toyota’s role in the electrification movement.

Through new facilities, strategic partnerships, and product launches, Toyota continues to push forward its commitment to sustainability and electric vehicle innovation—positioning itself as a formidable player in the global EV market.
