Turbo E-Hybrid Becomes Two Millionth Car Produced by Porsche in Leipzig

Employees at Porsche‘s Saxony plant are celebrating a special production milestone with the release of the two-millionth car produced in Leipzig, a Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid in Madeira Gold metallic.

The Leipzig assembly plant opened in 2002, and when it was expanded into a full-fledged factory, the Panamera became a “true leipziger” and production of the second generation began in 2016.

In November 2013, the first body shop and paint shop began operations. “The expansion to a complete factory was a groundbreaking decision for this facility,” explains Gerd Rupp, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche Leipzig GmbH.

Manufacturing of All Ranges

“As a comprehensive factory, we realize models in their entirety, from body construction to final assembly,” said Rupp. “This has laid the foundation for new car projects and for continued growth,” he added.

Today, Porsche is a major employer and economic engine in the central region of Germany, with this factory employing more than 4,400 people.

“Our employees are the biggest success factor. Without the commitment of this team, many of the challenges we have been faced with we would not have been able to overcome,” continues Rupp.

In recent years, the plant has developed into a center specializing in electromobility. In future, it will be possible to manufacture three types of drive systems (combustion, electric and hybrid) flexibly on a single line.

The Porsche factory in Leipzig has already won multiple awards, including one for its “smart factory” approach. The initial challenge was to best prepare the facility and its processes for the future by making them smart, digital and connected.

Sustainability is also central to Leipzig’s strategy. This includes the vision of a Zero Impact Factory, i.e. a production process that leaves no ecological footprint.
