Volkswagen and Enel X team up to install 3,000 ultra-fast charging points in Italy

Energy provider Enel X has established an alliance with Volkswagen Group to create a joint venture that will mark a before and after for Italy’s charging infrastructure.

As a result from this partnership, at least 3,000 ultra-fast charging points (350 kW) are expected to be installed by 2025, divided into 700 stations across the country. The ambitious project will give peace of mind to travelers and some areas where electromobility is still gaining momentum.

Volkswagen’s objective is to install 18,000 charging points in Europe and another 27,000 in North America and China in the mid-term.

Volkswagen Group technology representative and CEO Thomas Schmall referred to the nearly 20,000 high-power charging points the carmaker plans to expand in Europe: “These numbers represent one third of the high-power charging infrastructure needed on the continent”.

Schmall said that not only Volkswagen drivers will be able to benefit from the project: “Any other EV user will be able to take advantage of this initiative.”

Likewise, Enel X CEO Francesco Venturini remarked that the partnership between both companies is natural, given their sustainable expansion goals the companies have on their horizons.

“Europe’s automotive industry and its energy sector have the necessary expertise and resources to make possible an energy transition in the coming years, using transport electrification as one of the main actions,” Venturini concluded.

The joint venture will be a 50/50 partnership and its main focus is to boost confidence among electric vehicle users, who will be able to fully charge small capacity cars in just 20 minutes.
