Latam Mobility, a leading community in the promotion of sustainable mobility in Latin America, recently held the “North America Mobility & Net Zero Summit” in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, where it brought together the most important companies and leaders linked to energy, transportation, fuels and mobility, to show the progress and prospects of the industry in Mexico, the U.S. and the region.

The meeting, which had a participation of more than 460 attendees, 70 panelists, 25 partners and allies and the presence of 25 countries, featured the presentation “Is it Possible to Design and Manufacture DC Fast Chargers in Latin America?”, which was given by Martin Gallegos, CEO of Mobility Energy, a company dedicated to the production of multiple custom applications.

Gallegos indicated that in view of the advances in electric mobility projects, there are European, Asian and North American manufacturers that are very advanced in the sector. “When we had the opportunity to install some chargers, we found that there were issues that were not resolved, so we began to make solutions and the corresponding electrical adaptations, since some were not designed for the voltages used”.

The Mobility Energy executive indicated that they have made different solutions so that the time of entry into service of a charging station is only a couple of weeks. “We made the design beforehand and adjusted it to the needs.”

In addition, he said they have a trailer that can be mobilized and connected in medium voltage, which has certified measurements, meters, transformers and other equipment. “Our goal was to have a prototype in six months to market it, although it took us a year and a half to produce it.”

Multiple Chargers

The Mobility Energy director said that the current market has manufacturers from different markets, but that chargers and infrastructure must be designed so that the user does not suffer with retrofits.

We have designed chargers from the ground up that can be installed at any voltage and work for anyone, regardless of whether it is Chinese, European, American or Japanese, with quick connectors. The challenge we have is that a German vehicle and a Chinese vehicle can be charged simultaneously on the same charger.”

“We have a multidisciplinary engineering team. We have designed the electronics and power modules of our chargers, as well as working on the firmware, to maintain communications between the charger and the vehicle, which are key at the time of charging,” explained Martin Gallegos.

The Mobility Energy representative showed studies and advances made in different tests, with multiple equipment. “We have obtained important numbers and observed changes, even within the charging processes, to take advantage of the installed power. We make decisions with data and not with assumptions.”

Finally, Gallegos indicated that the company’s roadmap includes doing business in Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Chile and Colombia, and also indicated that they are working on certifications, which also represent a challenge and an important investment, to implement production plants in different countries.
