Brazil<\/strong> became the largest export market for Chinese electric vehicles<\/strong> (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a Reuters report, citing figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the South American<\/strong> giant displaced Belgium from first place after multiplying its imports by 13 times compared to the previous year, reaching 40,163 units in April.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The countries that experienced the biggest drops in Chinese electric car imports between January and April were Spain, France, the Netherlands and Norway.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decline in countries on the old continent is a direct consequence of the fact that, due to the European Union’s anti-subsidy investigation<\/strong> into Chinese electric vehicles, Chinese companies have sought to increase sales to non-European markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, Brazil took center stage<\/strong>, as it also became China’s second largest export destination for all automobiles in April, behind only Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annual figures between January and April indicated that Chinese auto exports to Russia increased by 23% (268,779 vehicles) while exports to Mexico and Brazil grew by 27% and 536%<\/strong> (148,705 and 106,448 cars, respectively), during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sharp increase in exports to Brazil comes ahead of a further increase<\/strong> in tariffs on imports of electric and hybrid vehicles scheduled for July, as the nation’s president, Lula da Silva, seeks to encourage local car production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
