Chilean authorities have set the goal of expanding electric mobility beyond Santiago de Chile, the leading city in the sector in Latin America.

According to BN Americas, more than half of the country’s municipalities lack any type of charging infrastructure, and the Metropolitan Region concentrates nearly three-quarters of the existing public charging points.

Currently, the Chilean government is drafting a national plan for charging infrastructure that should be announced by the end of the year.

You may also read: The Optimal: The Ideal Partner for Supply Chain Management

The main objective of the initiative will be to ensure that there are no more than 100 kilometers between charging points, said Undersecretary of Energy Luis Felipe Ramos during an online seminar on electromobility.

Only 123 of Chile’s 246 municipalities had at least one publicly accessible charging point by the end of last year, despite the 75.3% increase in the number of chargers registered between 2022 and 2023.

Moreover, of the 745 charging points available to the public at the end of last year, 71.8% were in the Metropolitan Region.

The Valparaíso Region, which has the second-highest number of chargers, accounts for just 5.1% of the total.

The disparity is even greater considering the number of registered electric vehicles, as Santiago accounted for 85.1% of the total 8,454 at the end of 2023.

Ramos noted that the charging infrastructure plan will initially focus on establishing a continuous network starting in Caldera, in the Antofagasta Region, and extending to the island of Chiloé, in the Los Lagos Region.

Meanwhile, the third version of the Electric Taxi Program from the Ministry of Energy is being implemented for the first time outside of Santiago.

This initiative, which aims to financially support taxi drivers in acquiring electric vehicles, now accepts applications from the regions of Antofagasta, O’Higgins, Atacama, and Biobío.

The “Latam Mobility & Conosur 2024” in Santiago, Chile, will bring together the most important companies and leaders related to energy, transportation, fuels, and mobility, to showcase the advances and perspectives of the industry in the country and the region.

The summit will feature a series of panels and thematic presentations that play a key role in advancing sustainable mobility, decarbonization, circular economy, and renewable energies, as well as prominent networking for the formation of key alliances on the road to zero emissions.

The event will take place from August 27 to 28 at the Hotel InterContinental, Santiago. To register, you can click here.
