Logistics transportation<\/strong> has rapidly evolved, driven by the need for efficiency<\/strong>, sustainability<\/strong>, and adaptation to a changing environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, Latam Mobility & Net Zero: Mexico 2024<\/strong> gathered over 1,200 attendees<\/strong>, 80 speakers<\/strong>, and representatives from over 30 countries<\/strong> at the World Trade Center<\/strong> in Mexico City<\/strong> to discuss various important topics, including “Logistics Transportation and Last Mile Technology.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing this, Fausto L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, CEO<\/strong> & founding partner of Yutong Guadalajara<\/strong>, Santiago Canales<\/strong>, Regional VP<\/strong> of Motive<\/strong>, Francisco Cabeza Santillana<\/strong>, commercial director of EV Chargers<\/strong> at Huawei Digital Power Latin America<\/strong>, Jos\u00e9 Milla<\/strong>, transportation director at Mercado Libre<\/strong>, and Ernesto Tatay<\/strong>, district director of Estafeta<\/strong>, shared their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in implementing sustainable transportation solutions<\/strong> in this sector, led by the moderation of Daniela Garc\u00eda<\/strong>, Country Manager<\/strong> in Brazil for Latam Mobility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial Investment and Operational Optimization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fausto L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, with 35 years of experience<\/strong> in the market, leads Yutong Guadalajara<\/strong>. He has worked with Ford<\/strong> and Volkswagen<\/strong>. “The initial investment<\/strong> in electric transportation technologies<\/strong> is important because many companies are still reluctant due to a lack of knowledge about the benefits they can offer,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santiago Canales<\/strong>, regional vice president of Motive<\/strong>, commented that operational optimization<\/strong> and risk reduction<\/strong> are key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Artificial intelligence<\/strong> and the use of data<\/strong> are essential to improving productivity<\/strong> and efficiency<\/strong> in logistics transportation<\/strong>, making it necessary to integrate technologies<\/strong> into the existing architectures<\/strong> of companies,” he asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logistics and Infrastructure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ernesto Tatay<\/strong> from Estafeta<\/strong> contributed his experience in logistics<\/strong>, especially in the port<\/strong> and distribution<\/strong> sectors, highlighting the cultural challenges<\/strong> and fear of change<\/strong> that hinder the adoption of more sustainable technologies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Training<\/strong> for the technical staff handling the new electric vehicles<\/strong> is necessary,” he said. Jos\u00e9 Emilia<\/strong>, transportation director at Mercado Libre<\/strong>, shared that infrastructure<\/strong> is one of the biggest challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Although the company has developed its logistics network<\/strong>, the penetration of charging infrastructure<\/strong> remains low in many locations. Technology<\/strong> and culture<\/strong> in adopting sustainable solutions<\/strong> are important,” he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities in Mexico<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Francisco Cabeza<\/strong> from Huawei<\/strong> spoke about the opportunities<\/strong> Mexico presents in electric mobility<\/strong>, being the fourth country<\/strong> worldwide in commercial vehicles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mexico’s energy matrix<\/strong> is less polluting than that of other countries, which can facilitate the transition<\/strong> to a more sustainable transportation<\/strong> system with electric charging solutions<\/strong>, which are reducing the operational costs<\/strong> of charging electric vehicles<\/strong>,” he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric Vehicles in the Last Mile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fausto L\u00f3pez<\/strong> explained that using electric vehicles<\/strong> reduces the carbon footprint<\/strong> and can offer significant savings<\/strong> in the long term. Yutong<\/strong> has implemented a demonstration program<\/strong> to allow customers to experience the benefits of these vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santiago Canales<\/strong> emphasized that the transformation<\/strong> to electric mobility<\/strong> cannot be a unilateral effort<\/strong>; it must include both the private<\/strong> and public sectors<\/strong>. Collaboration<\/strong> to develop an adequate infrastructure and a regulatory environment<\/strong> is important to facilitate this transition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ernesto Tatay<\/strong> suggested that government incentives<\/strong> are crucial to encourage the adoption<\/strong> of electric vehicles<\/strong>. He cited examples from Norway<\/strong> and Germany<\/strong>, which have implemented successful policies to accelerate the transition<\/strong> to electric mobility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jos\u00e9 Emilia<\/strong> stated that his company is committed to sustainability<\/strong> and is working to increase the reach<\/strong> of its distribution network through electric vehicles<\/strong>, acknowledging that 72%<\/strong> of consumers<\/strong> still prefer to shop online<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, following this discussion, logistics transportation technology<\/strong> and the last mile<\/strong> are at a turning point, with the collaboration<\/strong> between the private sector<\/strong> and government, along with education and training<\/strong>, being fundamental factors to move towards a greener<\/strong> and more efficient<\/strong> future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges in Implementing Sustainable Solutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The panelists agreed that the main barriers<\/strong> to implementing sustainable transportation solutions<\/strong> in the last mile<\/strong> are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Inadequate infrastructure<\/strong>: The lack of charging stations and support networks is a significant obstacle, especially in rural areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • High initial costs<\/strong>: The initial investment in electric vehicles is high, creating resistance among companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Lack of knowledge and culture<\/strong>: Many companies fear change and new technology, hindering the transition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Training of personnel<\/strong>: The need to train mechanics and staff in the maintenance of electric vehicles is fundamental.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Technology integration<\/strong>: New technologies must be seamlessly integrated into companies’ existing technological infrastructures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
