{"id":42707,"date":"2024-11-11T05:15:28","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T10:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/?p=42707"},"modified":"2024-11-08T14:26:29","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T19:26:29","slug":"china-sues-the-eu-for-electric-vehicle-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/china-sues-the-eu-for-electric-vehicle-tariffs\/","title":{"rendered":"China Sues the EU for Electric Vehicle Tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>China<\/strong> sued the <strong>European Union (EU)<\/strong> before the dispute mechanism of the <strong>World Trade Organization (WTO)<\/strong> for the tariffs imposed by the bloc on <strong>electric vehicles<\/strong> from the <strong>Asian giant<\/strong>, which came into force last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>EFE news agency<\/strong>, the <strong>Chinese Ministry of Commerce<\/strong> informed that the complaint seeks to \u201c<strong>safeguard the interests of the development of the electric vehicle industry<\/strong> and global cooperation on \u2018<strong>green transformation<\/strong>\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>China<\/strong> had already appealed last August to the <strong>WTO dispute mechanism<\/strong> over preliminary measures taken by the <strong>EU<\/strong> in response to subsidies received by <strong>Chinese electric car manufacturers<\/strong>, but this new lawsuit refers to the final measure of applying tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You may also read:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/in-2023-china-dominated-the-global-electric-vehicle-market-accounting-for-60-of-total-sales\/\">In 2023, China dominated the global electric vehicle market, accounting for 60% of total sales<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trade-dispute\"><strong>Trade Dispute<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is regrettable to see the <strong>European side<\/strong> announce its <strong>final decision<\/strong> (&#8230;) despite numerous objections from relevant actors such as <strong>member state governments, industries and public opinion<\/strong>,\u201d the <strong>ministry<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/BYD-3-1024x572-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/BYD-3-1024x572-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/BYD-3-1024x572-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/BYD-3-1024x572-1-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new <strong>tariffs<\/strong> came into force on <strong>October 30<\/strong>, date on which this same department assured that it \u201c<strong>neither agrees nor accepts<\/strong>\u201d the <strong>Brussels decision<\/strong>, which for the <strong>Chinese government<\/strong> \u201c<strong>seriously<\/strong>\u201d violates <strong>WTO rules<\/strong> and lacks \u201c<strong>objective and legal basis<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>European Executive<\/strong> will apply a <strong>tariff of 35.3%<\/strong> to the <strong>Chinese manufacturer SAIC<\/strong> (MG and Maxus, among other brands), <strong>18.8%<\/strong> to <strong>Geely<\/strong> and <strong>17%<\/strong> to <strong>BYD<\/strong>, for a maximum of <strong>five years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measure will also affect <strong>Western companies<\/strong> that produce in <strong>China<\/strong>, such as the <strong>American Tesla<\/strong>, to which a <strong>tariff of 7.8%<\/strong> will be applied, while others that have cooperated with the <strong>Commission<\/strong> in the investigation it carried out before approving the tariffs will be charged a rate of <strong>20.7%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>EU<\/strong> took this step because it considers that, despite the division it generates among the <strong>EU-27<\/strong>, it received sufficient support in the vote held by <strong>EU governments<\/strong> earlier this month: <strong>five countries<\/strong> opposed the application of the tariffs (including <strong>Germany<\/strong>), <strong>ten supported them<\/strong> and <strong>twelve abstained<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China sued the European Union (EU) before the dispute mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the tariffs imposed by the bloc on electric vehicles from the Asian giant, which came into force last week.
