Tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles Go into Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>tariffs<\/strong> approved by the <strong>European Union<\/strong> of up to <strong>35.3%<\/strong> on the import of <strong>electric vehicles<\/strong> from <strong>China<\/strong> entered into force, after their publication this Tuesday in the <strong>Official Journal of the European Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <strong>EFE news agency<\/strong>, the <strong>EU executive<\/strong> will apply a tariff of <strong>35.3%<\/strong> to the Chinese manufacturer <strong>SAIC<\/strong> (<strong>MG<\/strong> and <strong>Maxus<\/strong>, among other brands), <strong>18.8%<\/strong> to <strong>Geely<\/strong> and <strong>17%<\/strong> to <strong>BYD<\/strong>, for a maximum of five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measure will also affect Western companies that produce in <strong>China<\/strong>, such as the American <strong>Tesla<\/strong>, to which a tariff of <strong>7.8%<\/strong> will be applied, while others that have cooperated with the <strong>commission<\/strong> in the investigation it carried out before approving the tariffs will be charged a rate of <strong>20.7%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" including in the <strong>electric vehicle sector<\/strong>, but it must be underpinned by <strong>fairness<\/strong> and a <strong>level playing field<\/strong>,\u201d said <strong>European Commission Vice-President<\/strong> and <strong>Trade Commissioner<\/strong> <strong>Valdis Dombrovskis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>European Union<\/strong> is taking this step because it believes that, despite the division it generates among the <strong>EU-27<\/strong>, it received sufficient support in the vote held by <strong>EU governments<\/strong> earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that vote, five countries opposed the application of the tariffs (including <strong>Germany<\/strong>), <strong>10<\/strong> supported them and <strong>12<\/strong> abstained (<strong>Spain<\/strong> was one of them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In parallel, <strong>high-level political contacts<\/strong> continued between the <strong>commission<\/strong> and the <strong>Chinese government<\/strong>, as well as other technical meetings to try to find a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dombrovskis<\/strong> and the <strong>Chinese Minister of Commerce<\/strong>, <strong>Wang Wentao<\/strong>, held a videoconference conversation last Friday in which they agreed to continue negotiating a possible price increase for electric vehicle exports to the <strong>European Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EU sources<\/strong> pointed to the possibility of <strong>European officials<\/strong> traveling to <strong>China<\/strong> \u201cwhen the time is right\u201d to continue the talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>European Union<\/strong>, however, wants to negotiate at the same time the <strong>minimum export price<\/strong> with each of the companies individually, not only with the intermediation of the <strong>Chinese
