The State of Mexico has launched the first operational tests of Taruk, the first fully electric bus designed and developed using national engineering.

The vehicle is currently being evaluated along the Metepec-Toluca-Tenango corridor as part of a public mobility strategy aimed at transforming local transportation systems.

Taruk was built entirely with Mexican technology and tailored to meet the demands of urban mobility in the country’s largest cities.

With an electric propulsion system, a range of over 300 kilometers, and a 60-passenger capacity, it stands as a modern, environmentally friendly solution to replace outdated public transport units.

This initiative is part of a broader public policy that promotes safer, more efficient, and sustainable transportation. The plan includes incentives like scrappage bonuses to encourage the replacement of old vehicles with newer, cleaner models.

Technical assessment and academic collaboration

The tests are being conducted on a route operated by transport company TEO, allowing experts to evaluate the vehicle’s performance and efficiency under real-world conditions.

The project also benefits from strong collaboration with academic institutions. Taruk’s development involved the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM), and the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, reinforcing its role as a national innovation initiative.
