The city of Bogotá is strengthening its climate commitments with the acquisition of 269 fully electric buses for its Integrated Public Transport System (SITP). The new additions to the TransMilenio electric fleet will begin operating in late 2025, aiming to cut 26,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

The new articulated and bi-articulated buses will operate from El Vínculo yard in Soacha and Calle Sexta yard in Santa Fe. Authorities expect the TransMilenio electric fleet to improve air quality for over two million users in the metropolitan area.

“This first phase is a regional project involving Bogotá and surrounding municipalities. We’ll have the largest and most efficient electric fleet worldwide,” said to Cambio TransMilenio General Manager María Fernanda Ortiz.

The new buses will feature intelligent engines, regenerative braking systems, and onboard sensors for real-time monitoring of emissions, energy consumption, and performance.

The design complies with European Union clean service standards, and bi-articulated models will include particle channeling systems to reduce the city’s carbon footprint.

According to the District Environment Secretariat, the emission savings are equivalent to the carbon absorption of over 1.7 million trees per year.

With a total investment of COP 1.6 trillion, the city will also install new charging points to support the incoming TransMilenio electric fleet. The tender process is open to companies and private equity funds that meet the project’s technical criteria.

Bogotá currently operates 1,485 fully electric buses. With this latest initiative, the city aims to surpass regional peers like Santiago, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City in clean fleet leadership.

“Phase VI will allow us to implement a zero and low-emission fleet while building an efficient intermunicipal system,” stated Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán.

By 2036, Bogotá plans to operate a 100% electric TransMilenio fleet, fully integrated with the city’s First Metro Line.

Read more: Volvo Cuts CO2 Emissions by 26% with its Electric Vehicles

A commitment to clean mobility
