Mexico‘s automotive industry ended 2025 with mixed results in light vehicle production and exports, in a context marked by pressure from tariffs imposed by the United States and caution surrounding the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Although the last month of the year showed an upturn in manufacturing, the annual cumulative figure reflected declines in both production and exports, according to data from the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

December Recovery Does Not Reverse the Balance

During December 2025, light vehicle production in Mexico reached 243,961 units, representing annual growth of 8.45%, equivalent to 19,018 additional vehicles compared to the same month in 2024.

This monthly upturn was due to operational adjustments and increased activity at some plants, particularly assembly plants with strategies focused on high-demand models in North America.

However, December’s positive performance was not enough to offset the rest of the year’s performance.

From January to December, total production amounted to 3,953,494 vehicles, representing an annual contraction of 0.90%, with 35,989 fewer units than in 2024.

The result confirmed a year of adjustment for the sector, following several years of growth after the pandemic.

"Mexico"

Exports Fall More Sharply

The performance of exports was more adverse. In December 2025, Mexico exported 227,262 light vehicles, representing an annual decline of 14.55%, or 38,692 fewer units than in the same month of the previous year.

This decline was associated with lower demand in the US market and the reconfiguration of inventories by automakers.

In the annual total, exports amounted to 3,385,785 units, a reduction of 2.68% compared to 2024, equivalent to 93,301 fewer vehicles.

This interrupted a three-year streak of growth in exports following the COVID-19 health crisis, reflecting a more complex international environment for the sector.

During 2025, the US government maintained a 25% tariff on imports of light vehicles, as well as a tax of the same level on auto parts that do not comply with established rules of origin.

Added to this were tariffs of up to 50% on exports of steel, aluminum, and copper, strategic inputs for the automotive industry. These measures made vehicles and components manufactured in Mexico more expensive, reducing their competitiveness in the main destination market.

As a result, several automakers adjusted their production and export volumes, directly affecting plants in the country, whose business model depends heavily on external demand.

"Mexico"

The US Concentrates 8 Out of Every 10 Vehicles Exported

Despite the adverse environment, the United States remained the main destination for vehicles produced in Mexico.

During 2025, 2,653,897 units were shipped to the US market, representing 78.4% of total exports.

Canada ranked second with 376,251 vehicles, equivalent to 11.1%, while Germany ranked third with 104,334 units, representing 3.1% of the total.

This high concentration of exports to North America confirmed the Mexican automotive sector’s structural dependence on the United States and explained why any tariff or regulatory change has an immediate impact on production and export levels.

Domestic Market Maintains Moderate Growth

In contrast to the weakness in exports, the domestic market showed greater resilience. Light vehicle sales in Mexico reached 1,524,583 units between January and December 2025, representing annual growth of 1.3%.

In December alone, 154,395 units were sold, with Nissan and General Motors leading the market, supported by a diversified offering and financing strategies that sustained consumer demand.

The impact of the commercial environment was not uniform among automakers. In terms of exports, the largest annual declines in 2025 were recorded by Mazda, with a drop of 37.6%; Honda, with 20.5%; and Volkswagen, with 16.2%, reflecting adjustments in their shipping strategies and lower demand for some key models in the US market.

In terms of production, Honda contracted by 18.4%, Mazda by 16.6%, and Volkswagen by 12.2%, in line with the slowdown in exports.

In contrast, some automakers managed to increase their manufacturing volume. Toyota stood out with 26.6% growth in production, driven by the assembly of 310,152 units in 2025, followed by Ford with 7.9% growth and KIA with a 6.4% increase.

Despite the overall decline in the sector, General Motors remained the leading automaker in Mexico. During 2025, it produced 857,431 vehicles, although this figure represented an annual decrease of 3.6%. In exports, the company shipped 822,858 units, with a marginal contraction of 1% compared to 2024, maintaining its position as the country’s leading exporter.

USMCA Adds Caution to the Outlook

Beyond short-term results, the performance of the Mexican automotive industry comes at a strategic moment, and the review of the USMCA, which will formally begin on July 1, 2026, is already influencing investment, production, and supplier location decisions.

Among the central issues are possible modifications to the rules of origin, a key element in maintaining preferential access to the North American market and avoiding the imposition of new tariffs.

A possible tightening of these provisions could imply significant adjustments in the value chain, greater regional content requirements, and additional pressure on production costs, especially for companies with a high dependence on imported inputs.

The results for 2025 confirm that the Mexican automotive industry is undergoing a phase of structural adjustment, and the combination of tariffs, changes in US trade policy, and the imminent review of the USMCA point to a challenging 2026, in which the adaptability of automakers and the supply chain will be decisive in sustaining Mexico‘s competitiveness as one of North America’s leading automotive platforms.

2026: Year of Challenges for Mexico

Rather than ambitious announcements, 2026 will be a year for measuring results. Electric and low-emission mobility will no longer be evaluated by the number of pilot projects but will be judged by its ability to operate at scale, reduce real emissions, and improve the quality of urban life.

For Latin America, the challenge will be to capitalize on its experience in electric public transportation, close infrastructure gaps, and build stable policies that allow the transition to be not only green but also inclusive and economically viable.

With the 2026 Tour, Latam Mobility reaffirms its commitment to building a regional agenda that connects vision, public policy, innovation, and the market.

Through its stops in Monterrey and Mexico City, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile, the platform will continue to promote a collaborative approach to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more efficient, and more inclusive transportation systems, positioning Latin America as a relevant player in sustainable mobility at the global level.
