Within the framework of “Latam Mobility North America 2026,” the summit’s second panel brought together a top-tier group of specialists to address one of the most pressing issues in the transition toward sustainable mobility: connectivity and electric charging infrastructure.

Moderated by Andrés García Giraldo, Mobility Director of Invest In Latam, the participants agreed that while electromobility is already a palpable reality on Mexican streets, the real challenge for its massification lies not in the vehicles, but in the “backstage” of the system: a reliable, interoperable charging network capable of offering a dignified user experience.

The panel, which featured Javier Cuartas Villalobos, General Director of FAZT; Pablo Bernal, Automotive & Energy Solutions Engineer at Keysight Technologies; Roberto Rocha, CEO of VEMO; Tonatiuh Anzures, Director of Government Affairs for DiDi México; and Ana Acedo Tamayo, General Director of VoltDeo, offered a comprehensive view of an ecosystem that requires the collaboration of multiple actors to truly take off.

Location: The Critical Factor for Mass Adoption

Ana Acedo Tamayo, General Director of VoltDeo, a Mexican software development company for charging infrastructure management, introduced a concept that would become one of the conversation’s central themes: interoperability.

“Our company has developed software that allows managing charging infrastructure with any charger compatible with the OCPP protocol, to manage authentication, users, and payments,” she explained. The goal, she said, is to generate that interoperability between different chargers and prevent them from becoming “silos or islands” that ultimately frustrate the user experience.

Javier Cuartas Villalobos, General Director of FAZT, a Mexican company focused on the development and operation of fast and ultra-fast charging points, was emphatic in stating that without strategic locations, no network can function. “For us to adopt electromobility, there have to be charging networks. Just as there are gas stations everywhere, there have to be charging stations everywhere,” he asserted.

Cuartas revealed that FAZT, in alliance with Organización Soriana, is deploying an ambitious national network. They currently have more than 100 fast-charging points, projecting to close the quarter with over 300 in five cities and reach one thousand points by the end of the year.

“Soriana has more than 800 stores nationwide. It’s not just the quantity of locations, but the quality: users can do an activity, go to the bathroom, go to a restaurant. They are safe, accessible, and visible locations,” he detailed.

""

The Challenge of Regulation and Quality

Behind each charging point, however, lies complex engineering that must guarantee safety and reliability. Pablo Bernal, from Keysight Technologies, a company dedicated to developing software and testing equipment for those creating charging technology, issued a crucial warning: quality cannot be sacrificed for the sake of deployment speed.

“The challenge is to convey and raise awareness about the importance of regulation,” Bernal pointed out. He explained that while much of the infrastructure arrives from abroad with certifications from their countries of origin, Mexico is beginning to develop local technology, and it is essential to have mechanisms that validate its proper functioning.

The energy levels we are dealing with cannot be left to ‘let’s see who tests them.’ That can pose safety risks for users,” he warned.

Furthermore, Bernal highlighted the role of education in this process, mentioning that Keysight supports universities like Tecnológico de Monterrey in electromobility degree programs and diplomas, so that future professionals understand everything from battery fundamentals to charging protocols.

Integrated Ecosystem as a Response

Roberto Rocha, CEO of VEMO, shared the vision of his company, founded in 2021 with the idea of accelerating electromobility through an integrated business model. “Many things were missing: vehicles at the right price, charging infrastructure, incentives. We realized we had to have a different approach,” he recounted.

VEMO operates as an ecosystem that combines public charging infrastructure, electric vehicle fleets, financing, and technology.

Rocha explained that one of the structural problems they identified was the model of “free chargers” given to shopping malls, which proved unsustainable. “No one was happy: the mall gave away electricity, the user didn’t know if the charger would work, the brands received complaints,” he recalled.

The solution, he said, has been to develop multi-formats that cater to different needs: from chargers in shopping malls for users who are shopping, to 24/7 ultra-fast charging hubs with convenience areas for platform drivers and last-mile companies. “We are trying to attack the problem from several sides,” he summarized.

""

The Driver’s Experience: The Forgotten Link

From the perspective of mobility platforms, Tonatiuh Anzures, Director of Government Affairs for DiDi México, focused on who ultimately uses the infrastructure: the driver.

DiDi, which has operated in Mexico since 2018 and considers Monterrey one of its priority cities, has launched an ambitious goal of registering 100 thousand electric or hybrid vehicles on its platform between 2024 and 2030, with an initial investment of one billion pesos.

“For Didi, the driver experience is fundamental,” Anzures stated. He explained that density is key for a platform: users must be able to find a vehicle within a reasonable time, and this requires not only enough electric vehicles but also accessible charging infrastructure that allows drivers to recharge and return to operation without wasting time.

Anzures highlighted the importance of commercial alliances with companies like VEMO and FAZT, as well as with automakers like GAC, BYD, and JAC, to build a functioning ecosystem. “Accepting that we cannot do it alone is the best practice. To accelerate the transition, having alliances is extremely important,” he underscored.

Interoperability and Standards

Throughout the panel, the issue of charging standards emerged as one of the most complex and decisive aspects for the future of the sector.

Ana Acedo, from VoltDeo, insisted that interoperability is not a luxury but a necessity to prevent infrastructure from becoming obsolete or inaccessible. “Generating this interoperability will guarantee that we don’t end up with silos or islands, but rather achieve a whole ecosystem that helps users,” she affirmed.

Roberto Rocha brought a pragmatic vision based on market experience. He noted that the current dominant standards are GBT (present in approximately 70% of vehicles arriving in Mexico) and the Type 1 standard, with a clear trend towards convergence around Tesla‘s NACS standard in North America.

“The market is saying that this is what’s going to happen,” he stated, and revealed that through EMA (Electromovilidad Asociación México), they have recommended not bringing vehicles with standards like Chademo or second-generation GB/T, because there will be no infrastructure for them.

Pablo Bernal, from Keysight, complemented this view by noting that beyond the physical connector, the real challenge lies in the constant evolution of communication protocols between the vehicle and the charging station.

Protocols are constantly evolving. It requires station and vehicle manufacturers to make ongoing updates,” he explained, highlighting the role of testing equipment to ensure compatibility before new models hit the market.

Sustainable Business Models and Reliability

Javier Cuartas shared the lessons FAZT has learned by transferring its experience in the energy sector to charging infrastructure. “We come from the energy world. We have a control center where we monitor all chargers 24/7 and local maintenance teams to provide a quick response,” he explained.

For FAZT, charger reliability and availability are the keys to success, which is why they have implemented the same best practices used in solar and wind parks.

Ana Acedo, for her part, expressed pride that VoltDeo is a platform 100% developed by Mexicans and shared her aspiration that the country could become a benchmark in electromobility software, competing with European companies like Ampcontrol or Monta.

Tonatiuh Anzures added a fundamental lesson from a public policy perspective: the importance of dialogue with authorities and public-private collaborations.

“We have very good dialogue with the government of Nuevo León, both at the state and municipal levels. There is a lot of interest in energy transitions,” he noted, recalling that approximately 25% of pollutants in cities come from transportation, which highlights the opportunity represented by electromobility.

Towards a Collaborative Ecosystem

The panel concluded with a unanimous message: electromobility in Mexico will not be possible without the collaboration of all involved actors.

From technology developers to mobility platforms, passing through infrastructure operators and authorities, the path toward decarbonizing transportation requires a comprehensive approach that places user experience and the sustainability of business models at the center.

As moderator Andrés García noted at the close, “alone we cannot do it, we must integrate.” The challenge is also one of education and understanding that each new actor joining the ecosystem must do so with a comprehensive vision, so that the exponential growth on the horizon is orderly and sustainable.

The conversation on charging infrastructure will continue to be one of the central themes in upcoming industry meetings, as Mexico advances toward the goal of consolidating a dignified, reliable, and accessible charging network for all.

The Agenda to Decarbonize Transportation

This dialogue is part of the efforts that Latam Mobility is promoting throughout its 2026 tour, which will visit the region’s main markets to delve deeper into these and other crucial issues for the transformation of mobility.

Through its stops in Monterrey and Mexico City, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile, the platform will continue to promote a collaborative approach to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more efficient, and more inclusive transportation systems, positioning Latin America as a relevant player in sustainable mobility at the global level.
