{"id":65821,"date":"2026-06-10T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/?p=65821"},"modified":"2026-06-01T15:59:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T20:59:05","slug":"biomethane-from-sugarcane-waste-drives-brazils-agribusiness-toward-fleet-decarbonization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/biomethane-from-sugarcane-waste-drives-brazils-agribusiness-toward-fleet-decarbonization\/","title":{"rendered":"Biomethane from Sugarcane Waste Drives Brazil&#8217;s Agribusiness toward Fleet Decarbonization"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a move that is <strong>redefining agribusiness logistics in Brazil<\/strong>, <strong>Copersucar<\/strong> \u2013 one of the world&#8217;s largest sugar and ethanol trading groups \u2013 is accelerating the energy transition of its overland transport fleet using <strong>biomethane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company announced it is expanding the use of fuel made from <strong>sugarcane waste<\/strong> to power its trucks on routes connecting production plants to the <strong>Port of Santos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, <strong>more than 70 trucks<\/strong> already run on this renewable fuel, representing roughly <strong>14%<\/strong> of an estimated fleet of 500 vehicles dedicated to moving sugar and ethanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project, called <strong>BioRota<\/strong>, is laying the groundwork for <strong>100% of the company&#8217;s overland transport<\/strong> to eventually run on biomethane \u2013 a fuel that is already proving to be <strong>20% to 25% cheaper than diesel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You may also be interested in | <a href=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/changan-brazil-mexico-batteries\/\">Changan Invests in Brazil, Launches Models in Mexico, and Begins Testing Batteries with Over 1,500 km of Range<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-biorota-gains-scale-on-the-sugar-route\"><strong>BioRota Gains Scale on the Sugar Route<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>BioRota<\/strong> project was officially presented by <strong>Copersucar<\/strong> on <strong>May 13<\/strong> at an event held at its terminal in the <strong>Port of Santos<\/strong> \u2013 the world&#8217;s main sugar export hub, handling more than 50% of global shipments of the commodity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative involves using biomethane produced from sugarcane waste, such as <strong>vinasse<\/strong> (a liquid residue from fermentation) and <strong>filter cake<\/strong> (a solid residue from sugarcane juice filtration), to power heavy cargo trucks that traditionally relied on diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the pilot began in <strong>April 2024<\/strong>, the project has <strong>gained significant scale<\/strong> with the inclusion of multiple partner carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, five logistics companies operate under the <strong>BioRota<\/strong> model: <strong>Reiter Log<\/strong>, <strong>Transvale<\/strong>, <strong>GetOne<\/strong>, <strong>RodoMacro<\/strong>, and <strong>JR<\/strong>. Together, they run a fleet of between 70 and 74 trucks, depending on scheduled maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-d-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Biomethane\" class=\"wp-image-65815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-d-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-d-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-d-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-d-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-d.jpg 1290w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-range-power-and-a-circular-business-model\"><strong>Range, Power, and a Circular Business Model<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biomethane operation is <strong>not a small test<\/strong> \u2013 it&#8217;s a <strong>robust solution for heavy transport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trucks running on <strong>BioRota<\/strong> are nine\u2011axle units, capable of carrying up to <strong>74 tons<\/strong>, with a range of up to <strong>700 kilometers<\/strong> and a <strong>noticeably lower noise level<\/strong> than diesel models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These 6\u00d74 vehicles travel the highways of interior <strong>S\u00e3o Paulo<\/strong> state down to the coast, moving sugar and ethanol on a demanding route that requires <strong>power and reliability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A central piece of the initiative is its <strong>circular business model<\/strong>. <strong>Copersucar<\/strong> did not buy the trucks. Instead, it offers its partner carriers two key things: a <strong>long\u2011term freight contract<\/strong> (two to five years) and a <strong>guaranteed supply of biomethane<\/strong> produced at its own mills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that security, carriers invest in natural gas trucks (which have a higher upfront cost) and recover their investment through <strong>fuel savings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fuel&#8217;s production cycle <strong>closes the loop<\/strong> of the circular economy: vinasse \u2013 a residue from sugarcane fermentation \u2013 undergoes biodigestion to release biogas, which is then purified into biomethane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining material from this process goes back to the sugarcane field as a <strong>potassium\u2011based fertilizer<\/strong>, maintaining its agricultural function and eliminating waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-up-to-25-cheaper-than-diesel\"><strong>Up to 25% Cheaper than Diesel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the clear environmental benefit, the argument driving companies is <strong>economic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tom\u00e1s Manzano<\/strong>, CEO of <strong>Copersucar<\/strong>, stated: &#8220;It&#8217;s about <strong>20% to 25% cheaper<\/strong> to use biomethane. That fuel price difference is enough to pay for the more expensive asset and bring a return to the investor,&#8221; he said during the <strong>BioRota<\/strong> presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between <strong>April 2024 and March 2026<\/strong>, the biomethane operation has already replaced approximately <strong>5 million liters of diesel<\/strong>. The savings are especially relevant in a time of high oil price volatility, worsened by international conflicts \u2013 which gives biomethane an <strong>extra competitive edge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the environmental side, replacing diesel with biomethane represents a <strong>huge step forward<\/strong> for heavy transport decarbonization. <strong>Copersucar<\/strong> estimates that biomethane cuts <strong>greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%<\/strong> compared to fossil fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the <strong>BioRota<\/strong> initiative, <strong>more than 8,000 tons of CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong> have been avoided over the two years of the pilot project. That&#8217;s an achievement that lines up with Brazil&#8217;s plans to become a <strong>world leader in biofuels<\/strong>, leveraging its status as the <strong>world&#8217;s largest sugarcane producer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-c-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Biomethane\" class=\"wp-image-65812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-c-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-c-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-c-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-c-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/latamobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Brasil-180526-c.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Tom\u00e1s Manzano<\/strong>, CEO of <strong>Copersucar<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-100-of-the-mills-will-produce-biomethane\"><strong>100% of the Mills will Produce Biomethane<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Copersucar<\/strong>&#8216;s goal goes far beyond the current 70 trucks: the aim is for <strong>100% of the company&#8217;s overland transport<\/strong> to be done with biomethane\u2011powered trucks, and for this transition to be backed by <strong>massive fuel production<\/strong> at all its partner plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, biomethane production is concentrated in two mills of the <strong>Cocal<\/strong> group, located in <strong>Narandiba<\/strong> (capacity of 25,000 m\u00b3\/day) and <strong>Paragua\u00e7u Paulista<\/strong> (capacity of 60,000 m\u00b3\/day).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <strong>Tom\u00e1s Manzano<\/strong> projects that within <strong>ten years<\/strong>, all <strong>42 mills<\/strong> associated with <strong>Copersucar<\/strong> will be producing biomethane \u2013 at a pace of <strong>six to seven new projects per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The required investment for each biomethane plant ranges from <strong>R$200 million to R$300 million<\/strong> (roughly <strong>$40 to $60 million USD<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to supplying its own fleet, <strong>Copersucar<\/strong> plans to sell surplus biomethane on the market, <strong>diversifying its revenue<\/strong> and helping create a <strong>solid market<\/strong> for this biofuel in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>BioRota<\/strong> project \u2013 with <strong>more than 13,000 trips<\/strong> made and <strong>600,000 tons of sugar<\/strong> transported in its first two years \u2013 is a <strong>success story<\/strong> that marks a <strong>before and after<\/strong> in agribusiness logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-conversation-continues\">The Conversation Continues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through its stops in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/summit\/latam-mobility-mexico-2026-en\/\">Mexico City<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/summit\/latam-mobility-colombia-2026\/\">Colombia<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/summit\/latam-mobility-conosur-2026-en\/\">Chile<\/a><\/strong>,<strong>Latam Mobility<\/strong> will continue to promote a collaborative approach to <strong>accelerate the transition to cleaner, more efficient, and more inclusive transportation systems<\/strong>, positioning Latin America as a relevant player in sustainable mobility at the global level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be part of the movement that is accelerating Latin America\u2019s energy and urban transformation.
