Against the backdrop of the 2026 United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) , the urban mobility platform 99 – a DiDi subsidiary in Brazil – announced an ambitious plan to accelerate the country’s transition to sustainable transportation.

The commitment, unveiled during a parallel side event on sustainable transport at UN headquarters in New York , establishes that 99 will drive the registration of more than 300,000 new energy vehicles on its platform over the next five years.

The announcement took place in the context of the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport (2026-2035) , a global initiative aimed at transforming mobility systems worldwide.

The event was jointly organized by the Permanent Missions of China and Turkmenistan to the UN, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), and the China International Center for Innovation and Knowledge for Sustainable Transport.

You may also like | Brazil Surpasses 25,000 Charging Points for Electric Vehicles and Shows 21% Growth in Just Three Months

99‘s trajectory in electric mobility is a textbook case of accelerated growth. As explained by Thiago Hipolito , Senior Director of Innovation at 99 , just four years ago the platform had only 80 registered electric vehicles. Today, that figure has multiplied by more than 400x , surpassing 35,000 electrified vehicles.

Hipolito highlighted that growth no longer depends solely on the company’s own initiatives and its allies – it has entered a phase driven by driver demand itself.

“Today, when we look at our curve, it has already entered an almost organic phase. Growth no longer depends solely on our initiatives, as was the case two years ago. Today, drivers themselves are buying electrified vehicles, and that volume grows every month, almost exponentially ,” said the executive.

One of the key factors fueling this transition is the significant economic savings that electric vehicles deliver to drivers. According to data presented by 99 , a driver who switches from a combustion vehicle to an electric one can reduce operating costs by up to 80%. That saving translates into roughly 3,000 additional Brazilian reals per month in the driver’s pocket.

Hipolito explained that this economic advantage is completely reshaping how Brazilians view EVs. “A few years ago, electric cars were a niche product with high prices and little variety. Today, the offering has diversified, range has improved significantly – going from 200 kilometers to about 450 in the same price bracket – and the user experience has completely changed.”

The plan presented at the UN updates and expands the company’s previous commitments. 99 has laid out a roadmap toward 2030 that includes 130,000 electric cars, 70,000 motorcycles, 100,000 bicycles, and 10,000 vans – totaling 300,000 electric and hybrid vehicles.

Thiago Hipolito emphasized that the goal goes far beyond just vehicle count. “In addition to boosting vehicle adoption, we are working with our partners to develop charging infrastructure, foster the creation of startups, and attract investments in the sector. We want to offer replicable and quantifiable solutions for the transition toward low-carbon mobility in Brazil and around the world.”

99‘s success in Brazil is backed by the vast experience of its parent company, DiDi , in the Chinese market. According to the company’s 2025 Sustainable Development Report, by the end of 2025, pure electric vehicles already accounted for 74% of the kilometers traveled on DiDi’s ride-hailing services in China, and the platform had over 8 million new energy vehicles registered.

This proven track record, combined with 99‘s local expertise and the momentum of the Alliance for Sustainable Mobility, is laying the groundwork for Brazil to become a benchmark for electromobility in Latin America.

DiDi‘s expansion isn’t limited to Brazil, either. In Mexico, the company has committed to introducing 100,000 electric vehicles by 2030, in collaboration with Chinese manufacturers such as GAC, JAC, Changan, and BYD , as well as local partners.

99‘s announcement at the UN marks a milestone in Brazil’s energy transition for transportation. With over 35,000 electric vehicles already on its platform, operational cost savings of up to 80% , and a target of 300,000 vehicles by 2030 , the company demonstrates that sustainable mobility is not just a possibility – it is already a growing reality.

“Electromobility in Brazil is no longer a promise for the future; it is an established movement,” concluded Hipolito. And the numbers back up his words.

The Latam Mobility 2026 Tour will arrive in Santiago, Chile, on August 25, bringing together experts and strategic players to further strengthen the sustainable mobility ecosystem in the region.

From 80 to 35,000 Electric Vehicles in Four Years
