Tesla’s Arrival in Mexico to Trigger Major Investments in Electromobility

While it is true that large automotive manufacturers are investing heavily in electromobility in Latin America, Tesla‘s arrival in Mexico marks a turning point due to the brand’s leadership in the electric vehicle sector on a global scale.

Experts and authorities are convinced that the arrival of the brand will drive the energy transition from San Luis Potosi to the whole country, and will represent the beginning for other prestigious companies to join.

Juan Carlos Valladares, Head of the Secretary of Economic Development in the region, assures that as Tesla‘s Giga Plant and BMW‘s project progress in Nuevo Leon, the rate of investment in the state will start to grow.

Catalytic Effect

The government official pointed out that the electromobility industry will gradually become a catalyst for investment in the north-central region of the country.

“San Luis Potosi is ready to compete for all the investments and generate the conditions that will attract the largest number of supplier companies”, added Valladares.

The authority points out that due to the proximity of the supplier companies, those that are beginning to carry out transformation processes, and the nearshoring effect, it is in that strip of the national territory, where he considered that a special cluster of electro mobility could be developed.

Martha Delgado, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, highlighted that the investment will be around 5,000 million dollars and could generate up to 6,000 jobs.

Tesla’s landing comes on top of BMW’s plan to invest US$860 million in the manufacture of electric vehicles at its plant in San Luis de Potosí and announcements by other industry giants of new operations to expand or start up their electric production.

The factory will be located on the outskirts of the northern city of Monterrey, Nuevo León state, in the municipality of Santa Catarina.
