In November 2017, the first two electric buses were integrated into the public transport system of Santiago de Chile, with the aim of promoting decarbonization in the transport sector.
The incorporation of the vehicles represents a great contribution to the environment, by achieving savings of about 70 million liters of diesel, so that, in addition, 218,000 tons of CO2 were no longer emitted.
Six years later, the capital city has reached the outstanding figure of 2,000 electric buses in the RED System, which represents 31% of the total fleet.
This was reported by the Minister of Transport, Juan Carlos Muñoz, who explained that thanks to this number, Greater Santiago has consolidated its position as the city outside China with the largest number of electric buses.

Infrastructure Balance
In highlighting the milestone, the Chilean Transport Ministry also informed that in this first half of the year alone, 12 electroterminals have been installed, totaling 23 for the system.
One of them was presented this week, with the great attribute of having the highest power of the system. From there, 184 electric buses operate for 13 services that cover the eastern zone.
In this sense, Minister Muñoz emphasized the great positive transformation that electrified transport is leaving in the country, since the terminals are distributed in strategic points of the city.
“Unlike the old terminals, here very little noise and environmental pollution is generated and this change is valued by those who live in the surrounding areas,” he said.
Currently, Red Movilidad has 4,260 high standard buses operating on the streets, of which 2,411 are ecological or Euro VI buses and 1,849 electric buses circulating in Santiago.
