ABB announced the launch of a new version that combines the advantages of ultra-premium energy efficiency with highly efficient liquid cooling.
Through a press release, the company said the new design marks a new milestone in terms of power and reliability in a compact size for its SynRM IE5 (synchronous reluctance motor) series.
ABB explains that customers can use the liquid-cooled SynRM IE5 motors to save energy costs and reduce emissions in new projects or as a direct replacement for less efficient motors.
“They are ideal for a wide range of industries, such as marine propulsion, rubber and plastics production, and food and beverage,” the company details.

A major advantage of SynRM IE5 liquid-cooled SynRM motors is that they are much more efficient than the traditional liquid-cooled induction motors currently in use and offer great potential for improvement with energy-saving technology.
Energy efficiency is crucial to optimizing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of an electric motor, as the cost of the energy required to operate it over its lifetime accounts for about 97% of a motor’s TCO, while the acquisition cost accounts for about 2%.
IE5 efficiency class motors have 40% lower energy losses than commonly used IE3 motors. This makes the payback time for selecting an IE5 motor over an IE3 motor often less than a year.
“Reliability is improved by highly efficient cooling combined with the cool SynRM rotor and cooling ribs in the bearing assembly, which reduces the operating temperature of the bearings. This contributes to increasing the service life of this key component and reducing maintenance requirements,” details ABB.
Stefan Floeck, President of ABB‘s IEC Low Voltage Motors division, says the company pioneered both SynRM technology and liquid cooling for induction motors.
“Now we have brought them together in our IE5 SynRM liquid-cooled motor, which allows customers to enjoy the benefits of ultra-premium efficiency in an even wider range of applications. It is another world first in this series following the launch of our IE5 SynRM enhanced safety motor for hazardous areas,” he said.
The high power of the liquid-cooled IE5 SynRM offers greater design flexibility. It can allow a machine to be upgraded to deliver more power in the same footprint, or it can allow for a more compact installation with the same power.
