ABB Unveils Digital Solutions for the Mining Industry in Chile

ABB presented in Chile a set of digital solutions that are at the forefront of the needs of the mining industry, referred to Automation, Robotics and Digitalization in the sector.

Leonardo Gama, Digital Solutions Consultant of ABB in Brazil, was in charge of presenting part of the company’s portfolio. The executive referred to the use of Digital Twin to develop an optimal advanced process control strategy in a mining operation.

He explained that digitalization is a fundamental part of the control strategy, emphasizing that “without data there is no control.”

“If we manage the information in the right way, with the right controls, such as an application of the APC class, which is MPC, you can advance in optimization, quality stabilization and achieve new production goals,” Gama emphasized.

Technological Advances

In his presentation, Gama emphasized that comminution plays a crucial role in the mining industry. Optimal control of the circuits in this process is a major challenge for the sector, due to the large variations in feed and operating conditions that affect its efficiency.

“At Boliden’s Aitik site, a digital twin represents comminution. In addition to the current PID strategies developed on site to cope with the different scenarios of an operation, a digital twin was used to show the performance gains using Model Predictive Control (MPC) compared to existing control strategies” highlighted the ABB executive.

Another topic analyzed by the specialist was cybersecurity. In this regard, Gama emphasized the company’s capacity to be able to report on the health of the cyber area of the clients, allowing to have an implementation roadmap that can support any type of vulnerability of a company.

ABB’s innovations were presented at the 11th International Congress on Automation, Robotics and Digitalization in Mining, Digital Mining 2024.
