The Government of the City of Buenos Aires launched a tender for the purchase of 74 electric buses, in an attempt to incorporate new technologies in urban public transportation.
According to local newspaper Dinamic, the project envisages the purchase of 59 units with a capacity of 70 to 85 passengers and 15 articulated units that will be able to transport more than 120 people.
The technical specifications included in the bidding documents require all vehicles to have a low floor, air conditioning and electric power supply, in response to the demand for more sustainable mobility options.

Public Project
The project is under the direct responsibility of the City’s Ministry of Infrastructure.
To cover the electricity needs of these units, the acquisition of 60 battery chargers, specific for the two types of vehicles tendered, is contemplated.
However, no mention is made of the construction of any complementary infrastructure, since the projected electric buses are exclusively battery-powered and do not require additional facilities, as the streetcars might need.
Despite this, the Buenos Aires Government has described these vehicles as “electric streetcars” and “trambuses” in its official communications, which has generated some confusion as to the true nature of the units.
The tender has been issued by Subterráneos de Buenos Aires (SBASE), although company sources have clarified that their role is limited to collaborating with the process, and have ruled out that SBASE will participate in the operation of these electric buses.
Although the company has the capacity to operate this type of vehicles, on this occasion the project is under the direct responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure of the City.
It is not yet defined whether these new buses will be part of existing routes or whether new lines will be created for their operation in specific areas of local jurisdiction.
