The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the Spanish Railways Foundation, has allocated 4.7 million euros to promote bicycle use in ten Spanish municipalities with populations under 50,000 inhabitants.
This initiative aims to strengthen the commitment to active and sustainable mobility, highlighting the potential of bicycles as a transformative element in towns, cities, and rural areas.
Out of more than 235 applications received from 44 provinces, the selected municipalities are located in Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia, Galicia, and the Basque Country, representing a combined population of over 161,000 inhabitants.

Destination of the Subsidies
The subsidies will cover up to 90% of the costs for the selected projects, funding:
- 21 kilometers of bike lanes, connecting 36 key facilities.
- 22 bicycle parking areas.
- 12 usage counters (counters) to measure and monitor cyclist flow.
The Spanish Railways Foundation aims, through these projects, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, decrease pollution, and improve connectivity between railways and bicycles.
Additionally, the initiative seeks to enhance the recreational use of bicycles, benefiting cycle tourism and other related business models, generating a positive economic impact in these communities.
Finally, the Foundation has announced plans for a second funding round, with a budget of approximately 15 million euros.
