On Thursday, February 6, Bogotá will celebrate a new edition of Car-Free and Motorcycle-Free Day, a day aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and reducing the environmental impact caused by private vehicles.
The measure, which will be in effect from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., prohibits the circulation of private vehicles and motorcycles throughout the city. This annual initiative aims to improve air quality, reduce noise, and encourage the use of transportation methods that are more environmentally friendly.
To ensure mobility for citizens during the day, the Bogotá Mayor’s Office has implemented several measures, including extended hours for the Integrated Public Transport System (Sitp) and Transmilenio.
Operation
The system will operate at 100% capacity, with 10,543 buses in circulation and extended schedules from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. This will allow citizens to travel conveniently throughout the day.
Additionally, there will be 8,000 spaces in the system’s bike parking lots and 3,300 bicycles available through the Shared Bicycle System for those who prefer this mode of transport.
These measures are designed to provide efficient and sustainable mobility alternatives, encouraging the use of public transport and bicycles.
The use of bicycles will be one of the main alternatives during this day. Bogotá has an extensive network of 661 kilometers of bike lanes, allowing cyclists to travel safely. For this day, an additional 89 kilometers of bike paths will be available, further facilitating access to cycling.
Citizens can also choose to walk, taking advantage of the wide sidewalks and public spaces designed for pedestrian traffic. This represents an excellent opportunity to enjoy the city without the usual vehicular congestion, in a cleaner and quieter environment.
Although the measure prohibits the circulation of private vehicles and motorcycles, there are some exceptions to ensure that essential services are not disrupted.
