The coordinator of the Olinia Project, Rafael Garayoa, gave a remarkable presentation at “Latam Mobility: North America: 2025” to introduce the initiative aimed at accelerating the transition to electric mobility in Mexico.
He explained that the main objective of the program is the technological development that serves as a platform for an ecosystem of low-emission vehicles.
He detailed that the project includes passenger transport, last-mile, and private vehicles with an average of 100 kilometers of range in this first stage.
Olinia has a high-level structure for the development of key components in the vehicle, such as battery, inverter, motor, and chassis.
Breaking Barriers
Garayoa explained in his presentation that the arrival of Olinia in Mexico aims to eliminate the challenges of acquiring electric vehicles, which are mostly related to their high cost.
“80% of mobility needs are within 30 kilometers and can be met with lightweight vehicles that are not as expensive as the Olinia. Lightweight vehicles are gaining traction; in 2023 alone, 1,300,000 units were registered,” he stated.
He emphasized that the Olinia Project has an expert panel made up of representatives from the public and private sectors for the development of this innovative program in Mexico and the region.
The Government formed a team of researchers from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and the National Technological Institute of Mexico, which this year will have a budget of 25 million pesos ($1.25 million) to develop the model.
