Private car use in Mexico increased 11% since the pandemic, according to Moovit report

The global pandemic has considerably changed the means and ways on how people move. Specifically in Mexico, a country with more than 20 million inhabitants, public transport suffered a 50% crash, according to data provided by Moovit.

The use of the private car has been one of the means with the most changes, and before the confinement decree in March 2020, only 13% of the inhabitants used their own cars, a figure that has suffered an increase of 11% since that the existence of Covid-19 was reported in the Aztec country.

In the survey carried out in the first quarter of 2021, Mexicans, when asked about the reasons why they would use public transport in the coming months, were forceful in expressing that they do not have another means of transport to move around. At least that’s what 57% answered.

Continuing with the previous question, 24% answered that they have not changed their preferences in the use of public transport and 7% said that it is more profitable due to the pandemic.

The lowest (and worrying) figure came from those people who showed they felt safe from contagions within transport units, and that is that only 3% responded positively to this question.

Small change in micromobility

The frequency in the use of bicycles and scooters increased from 2 to 4%, references that are somewhat low but still mark a small growth in this type of mobility. Thanks to this, some cities in Mexico are now expanding lanes for these vehicles.

On the other hand, before the pandemic only 3% of Mexicans mobilized walking; an item that did register a considerable increase of 10 percent, as did the taxi service on demand.
