Colombia to Launch First Heavy-duty Electric Corridor: Connecting Bogotá with Barranquilla and Cartagena over 1,200 km

Colombia

In an event held in the capital of Atlántico department, Colombia’s Minister of Transport, María Fernanda Rojas, announced the official launch of “Ruta-E: Clean Energy in Motion,” the first initiative of its kind in the country aimed at creating an electric corridor for freight vehicles.

The project will connect Bogotá, Barranquilla and Cartagena along a stretch of more than 1,200 kilometers, consolidating one of the most important commercial routes in the country under a vision of clean, modern, intermodal mobility.

According to data from the Transport Ministry, the proposed corridor will run through the country’s three largest cities, where approximately 22% of the cargo moving across national territory currently circulates.

The initiative not only seeks to promote the use of electric freight vehicles, but also to integrate roads, ports, railways and the Magdalena River, under a scheme that will modernize Colombia’s logistics system.

The goal is to implement sustainable infrastructure along one of the country’s busiest routes, improving freight transport efficiency, reducing operating costs, and strengthening Colombia’s economic competitiveness.

Barranquilla: A Logistics and Energy Hub for the Country

The choice of Barranquilla as the venue for the official launch was no coincidence. During her speech, Minister María Fernanda Rojas highlighted the strategic role that the capital of Atlántico plays in Colombia’s logistics development.

“Barranquilla is showing why it is one of Colombia’s great logistics hubs. Here we have ports, rivers, roads, airport infrastructure, and now also the projects that will lead the energy transition in transportation,” she said.

“Our purpose is clear: move more cargo, reduce costs, generate jobs, and build a more competitive and sustainable logistics system for the country,” added Minister Rojas.

The corridor will link Bogotá with Cartagena and Barranquilla, consolidating a development axis that, according to government projections, will enable the decarbonization of heavy transport — one of the sectors that contributes most to polluting emissions and fossil fuel consumption — aligning with the climate and sustainability goals promoted by the national administration.

International Partnerships and Key Players

The development of “Ruta-E: Clean Energy in Motion” would not be possible without the coordination of multiple public and private sector actors and international cooperation.

The Minister of Transport explained that the project will be carried out in partnership with Calstart and Drive to Zero, international organizations specialized in logistics and sustainable transport solutions that support countries in their transition to zero‑emission mobility systems.

These entities will collaborate in seeking strategic partners to facilitate the purchase of electric freight vehicles and the installation of charging stations along the more than 1,200 kilometers of the route.

In addition, the initiative will involve distributors, transport companies, energy operators, road concessionaires, international cooperation agencies, and various public sector entities. Collaboration among all these actors will be essential to build the necessary infrastructure and ensure the efficient operation of the electric corridor.

Launch Date

Minister María Fernanda Rojas confirmed that this ambitious initiative is set to go live on June 17, 2026.

On her official X (formerly Twitter) account, the head of the Transport Ministry detailed the project’s pillars: “In Barranquilla today we announced the start of the project for the first electric corridor for freight vehicles in Colombia, in alliance with Calstart and Drive to Zero starting June 17: 1,200 km from Bogotá – Barranquilla – Cartagena. Charging stations along the route,” the official wrote.

The national government believes that “Ruta-E: Clean Energy in Motion” could become a model for the future development of freight transport in Colombia, driving technological innovation, job creation, strengthening of national infrastructure, and investment in clean energy.

It is expected that with this initiative, the country will take a historic step toward transforming its transport system, making it more sustainable, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

The Next Big Gathering in Medellín

Latam Mobility Colombia 2026 is the most important sustainable mobility event in the region. The meeting will take place on June 10 and 11 at the Orquideorama of Medellín’s Botanical Garden — a natural and iconic venue that will host two intensive days of panels, workshops, networking, and presentations on the latest innovations in electric mobility, hydrogen, biofuels, and charging infrastructure.

The invitation is open to all ecosystem players: companies, fleets, condominium administrators, dealerships, network operators, energy generators, and citizens interested in being part of the change.

Latam Mobility expects to turn Medellin into the epicenter of sustainable mobility in the region, proving that Colombia is ready to win the game of future mobility.
