ABB E-Mobility and Scania Unveil New Charging Technology for Heavy Vehicles

The charging infrastructure for trucks and heavy fleets with constant and vital operations in the development of companies represents one of the difficulties in terms of energy and cost savings.

Faced with this scenario, companies linked to the automotive industry and the mobility sector undertake key partnerships and technological innovations, with the aim of making vehicle performance efficient.

In this regard, Scania successfully installed and tested the ABB E-mobility megawatt charging pilot system, which represents the next milestone in the development of an optimal, high-power charging solution for heavy-duty vehicles. This technology will enable charging time for fleets to be halved.

Vital Partnership

Both companies are committed to enabling emission-free future transportation and advancing the development of tomorrow’s technology. The production of a solution to rapidly charge these commercial electric vehicles, which will also provide significant range, is an important step towards increasing sales of heavy-duty vehicles that can run without fossil fuels.

The initial test, which demonstrates the technical feasibility of high-current charging, is an important first step towards ABB E-mobility’s future MCS system.

The result will be the progressive development of high-power chargers, starting at 1500 amps and eventually extending to the full MCS range of up to 3000 amps.

Scania and ABB E-mobility have invested and played a decisive role in the development of this system, in collaboration with CharIN (the MCS system is planned for 2024).

MCS technology is essential for Scania’s long-haul electric trucks, where both driving time and rest time are regulated by law.

The vehicle can run for a maximum of 4.5 hours before the driver has to take a 45-minute break. During this rest time, the truck will charge enough energy to operate for another 4.5 hours. Due to the size of the batteries, fast, high-powered charging is essential.
