Amazon Launches First Fleet of Electric Bicycles in London and Installs Large Micromobility Hub

With the goal of becoming carbon neutral and meeting the guidelines of the Paris Agreement in 2040, 10 years earlier than the pact states, Amazon continues to develop strategies in mobility and sustainability.

The e-commerce giant presented its first micromobility center in the United Kingdom, where electric bicycles will join the large fleet of electrified vehicles to continue leading the delivery system in an environmentally friendly way.

This initiative is part of the “Shipment Zero” program, which consists of delivering 50% of Amazon’s shipments with zero net carbon emissions by 2030.

The e-cargo bikes that the company has included will directly replace thousands of trips in traditional vans on London’s roads and reduce traffic congestion.

With the addition of electric delivery vans, electric cargo bikes and walkers, Amazon estimates to make more than five million last-mile deliveries a year in central London.

More Efficiency and Less Pollution

Amazon’s UK Manager, John Boumphrey detailed that the new e-cargo bikes, walkers and growing electric vehicle delivery fleet will help make more deliveries to customers with zero emissions in London and across the UK.

For UK Transport Minister Trudy Harrison, Amazon’s plans will not only boost green employment opportunities, but also ensure customers continue to receive their parcels while working to protect the planet from climate change.

“Industry and government are working hard to achieve our net zero targets and support sustainable transport growth that will help create economic opportunities and support thousands of jobs across the UK,” he added.

For his part, Energy Minister Greg Hands welcomed Amazon taking the initiative to move away from fossil fuels. “This is a fantastic vote of confidence from Amazon in British energy security, renewables and electric vehicles, and a great boon for green jobs across the UK.”

The micromobility hub was installed in partnership with the London Borough of Hackney, with the aim of making more than one million deliveries to customers each year, adding to the large number already being made by its electric vans.

Amazon has more than 1,000 electric delivery vans on UK roads and last year helped the company deliver more than 45 million parcels. Its fleet of zero-emission vehicles will expand further as more e-cargo delivery centers are expected to launch across the UK in the coming months.

In addition, Amazon recently announced five new all-electric heavy-duty vehicles. Weighing 37 tons, these are among the first in the UK, the first in Amazon’s fleet and replace traditional diesel trucks.
