The recent creation of the electric vehicle factory Olinia, announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, marks a significant advance in the Mexican automotive industry.
However, the Mexican Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles (AMIVE), chaired by Francisco Cabeza Santillana, has pointed out that one of the main challenges for Olinia’s operation will be the charging point infrastructure.
Cabeza Santillana emphasized that, although the manufacturing of affordable electric vehicles is a positive step, it is essential to ensure that users can conveniently charge their vehicles.
He highlighted the need to establish models that allow electric vehicle owners to charge their units at home, especially in multifamily residential areas, where the installation of private chargers can be complicated.
Additionally, Cabeza Santillana stressed that, although Mexico is the seventh-largest country in the world in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, it is important for vehicles to have access to a charging network that does not solely depend on car production.
On the other hand, the president of AMIVE also highlighted the importance of the Mexican government considering electric mobility as a national consumer good, which could foster public policies and incentive programs that facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles and the expansion of charging infrastructure.
