AVL Highlights Vehicle Manufacturing Process Importance on the Road to Decarbonization

Latam Mobility, the first community linked to sustainable mobility in Latin America, organized the “Latam Mobility: México 2022” to present the advances in key sectors of the industry and its decarbonization strategies.

The meeting was held at the World Trade Center in Mexico City on October 12, where Geoffrey Gerring, E-Mobility Business Development of AVL, an Austrian company dedicated to the development of combustion, hybrid and electric engines, explained the current state of the art in electrification technology and the challenges facing the industry.

The company has a presence in more than 26 countries, 70 years of experience and 11,000 employees around the world. “AVL currently allocates more than 10% of its revenues to various manufacturers to drive the development of products linked to the electrical sector. In addition, the company’s scope covers the aviation and maritime sectors. Basically, we can help with anything with an engine,” Gerring noted.

Electromobility’s Role

The executive highlighted the importance of electromobility in the optimal development and drive towards sustainable transition, as long as the whole set that integrate electric vehicles are of clean origin.

“From AVL we accompany the entire process in the initial phases with consultancies, analyzing raw material solutions, determining the carbon footprint in the production phase, and in the generation of clean energy,” explained Gerring.

In addition, AVL is responsible for following up during the final part of the process, after the end of its useful life, i.e. during recycling procedures. “We help design components that can be recycled or have a second life,Gerring noted.

Industry challenges

In relation to the challenges, the AVL representative indicated that progress must be made in CO2 reduction and alternative fuels, as well as in energy efficiency, digitalization, connectivity, durability, safety and cost reduction, in order to achieve a final product in optimal conditions that benefits consumers.

“The goal is based on the product meeting the standards demanded by both manufacturers and users. Finding the best balance between process, launching reliable, safe and cost-effective products is vital for the automotive industry,” he said.

To make this possible, AVL offers a set of complete solutions that address the fundamental pillars in the construction of an electric vehicle: Batteries, fuel cells, electrified propulsion system, charging infrastructure and the complete and final integration to the vehicle.
