In almost a decade of operations in Brazilian territory, BYD continues to expand the radar to massify electromobility in the Amazonian country. The Chinese manufacturer arrived in Brazil in 2015, when it inaugurated its first 100% electric bus assembly plant in Campinas.
It currently has five models launched and a consolidated network of dealerships in operation. In addition, in April 2022, BYD Energy inaugurated new facilities and a complete line of photovoltaic modules in the Brazilian market.
Recently, the Asian brand sealed an agreement to land in the city of Bahia and simultaneously start up three factories in Camaçari, 50 kilometers (km) from Salvador.
With a multi-million dollar investment, BYD reaffirms its commitment to the Brazilian automotive industry. Domestic production will allow more competitive prices and the possibility for citizens to have access to electric vehicles.

The complex will consist of three manufacturing units. One will be dedicated to the production of chassis for electric buses and trucks. The other will produce hybrid and electric cars, with an estimated capacity of 150,000 units per year in the first phase. The third unit, focused on lithium and iron phosphate processing, will supply the global market, using the site’s existing port infrastructure.
“This is an extremely important moment for BYD in the Americas,” says Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President and CEO of BYD Americas in an official company statement.
“These new factories in Bahia will bring innovation and the highest standards in technology, this will enable the introduction and acceleration of electromobility in the country, a key move to combat climate change and really improve people’s quality of life,” she explained.
Scheduled to come on line in the second half of 2024, the three factories are expected to generate more than 5,000 jobs in the coming years. “The social contribution will be significant. We want to hire local labor starting this year so that they can begin to receive all the necessary training and knowledge transfer,” said Tyler Li, President of BYD Brazil.
The new BYD complex will attract suppliers of various types, whether from the technical parts or service sectors. The company intends to contribute to regional development by giving priority to local suppliers.
