Chile Records Historic Increase in Electric Vehicle Sales

Chile experienced a historic increase in electric vehicle sales during the month of March 2024, with figures that drive the energy transition.

Plug-in hybrids increased 219.2% with 103 vehicles sold in March, a record figure in their category. Meanwhile, 100% electric models registered 325 units sold with an increase of 190.2% in that month, which is also the best historical record.

For the National Automotive Association of Chile (ANAC), this was a historic month in terms of new light and medium plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and 100% electric vehicles (BEVs), which boosted registrations of vehicles powered by zero and low emission technologies, with an increase of 134% during the past month with 1,268 units sold.

Positive First Quarter

The positive performance was reflected in the first quarter sales for the referred categories, which obtained a 55.4% growth and 2,535 units registered during the first three months of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the accumulated annual performance, they are only six units below the record achieved in the first three months of 2023.

Conventional or self-recharging hybrids registered an increase of 110.2% with 412 units, being the best-selling category among all new energy vehicles.

The electric bus market accumulated 16 units sold during the first quarter, with a contraction of 98.4%, due to the fact that no new fleets of electric units have been incorporated into the RED system. The truck market added 9 units registered during the same period.
