Colombia: Cartagena to Replace Horse-drawn Carriages with Electric Vehicle

The city of Cartagena de Indias announced the replacement of traditional horse-drawn carriages, one of the city’s main tourist attractions and a target of criticism for animal abuse, with the presentation of an electric car prototype.

The unit uses clean energy for its traction and it is expected that by the end of 2024 the process of transition from animal-drawn cars to electric propulsion will be completed.

The new car costs approximately $25,000. It is an electric-powered carriage that can carry up to four people plus the driver; it has a canopy to protect passengers from the sun or rain and looks very similar to the old horse-drawn carriages.

Government Support

The Mayor of Cartagena, Dumek Turbay, explained that he intends to make the city environmentally friendly and promote sustainable tourism.

In addition, the transition to the use of these cars, which for the next 20 days will make test tours of the city, will allow the traditional coachmen to consolidate “as a serious tour operator,” in Turbay’s words.

We are going to accompany them, we are going to place the seed capital, we are going to seek knowledge transfer so that they are prepared and can manage this process that is coming successfully and that will result in a better quality of life and better income,” Turbay said.
