Copec Leads Project to Supply Energy to Electric Buses and Build 10 Electroterminals in Santiago de Chile

Chile has set important goals for the energy transition and electric mobility. One of the plans announced by the government is called “Efficient Transport: Energy on the Move”, which set short-term achievements, such as exceeding 10 times more electric vehicles than 2017 and over 150 public electrolineras.

In addition, within the framework of the Energy Efficiency Law, a regulation was included to promote efficient transportation, focusing on electromobility, and to provide regulations for component standardization favoring a safe development of this transformation, such as research, dissemination, among others.

In this sense, adding important contributions to the change required by the planet, Copec, along with Copec Voltex, a company focusing its efforts and technology on the sustainable mobility of people, has major projects in Chile.

In order to consolidate its commitment to continually strengthen the country’s electric charging infrastructure in public transport, public spaces and also in homes, in order to encourage the increasing use of electric vehicles, the company announced that it will build 10 of the 13 new electric terminals and supply the energy for 80% of the new fleet.

Copec Voltex will work together with STP and Metropol operators, in a program sponsored by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, which will renew public transport with 991 electric buses and 649 ecological buses.

Project Details

The new electroterminals led by Copec Voltex will have 197 fast chargers, making the company the largest supplier of energy for electric buses in Chile. It is estimated that the new centers and electric fleet will come into operation in June 2022, with 1700 electric buses for public transport.

Copec Voltex will be in charge of the design, engineering, construction, maintenance, load management software and supply of 100% renewable energy.

Investment and Scope

The plan covers the adjudication of service unit 1, which includes routes between the sectors of Pudahuel, Huechuraba, Conchalí and Independencia. On the other hand, service unit 2 is focused on serving lines that go to the center of the capital and eastern Santiago, while for units 3 and 5 the coverage goes from the Southern part of the Metropolitan Region to the districts of La Reina and Ñuñoa.

Approximately US$30 million have been allocated to strengthen the operation of public transport and the network.

Leonardo Ljubetic, Development and Management Manager of Copec, highlighted the work carried out to promote the energy transformation of Chile and bring all the benefits and quality of electromobility to public transport users.

“Last December we inaugurated the El Conquistador electric terminal, the largest in South America, and now, together with STP and Metropol, we have been awarded 10 of the 13 new terminals for the Metropolitan Region,” he said.

Likewise, Ljubetic informed that to the 215 buses put into service in 2020, another 800 will be added only in the Metropolitan Region. He specified that in total, they will energize more than a thousand electric buses in Greater Santiago, which is equivalent to approximately 60% of the transport of this type in the territory.

“We are committed to the development and movement of people, companies and the country, and that is why we want to be part of the challenges of sustainable growth, transforming our business, taking care of the environment and our surroundings, contributing to the development of society as a whole,” he added.

He assured that Copec Voltex will continue to promote alliances and develop solutions and services of the highest technology and energy efficiency so that not only in Santiago, but also in the rest of Chile, users can count on clean and sustainable public transport.
