Electric Vehicle Sales in Peru Increased by 84.2% in 2022

The Peruvian Automotive Association (AAP) published figures on the behavior of electric vehicles in the country during 2022, a year in which significant increases in the supply of these low-emission cars were evidenced.

Alberto Morisaki, Manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the Peruvian Automotive Association, said that the commercialization of hybrid and electric vehicles added 248 units in December 2022, to reach 2,680 units, reaching a growth of 84.2% compared to 2021.

“This growth is a clear example of the greater awareness of the population regarding environmental care, which has gone hand in hand with a greater and more varied offer by dealers who have facilitated the entry of such units into the Peruvian market,” he explained.

Data by Segment

The Peruvian automotive association’s report details that the most sold electrified vehicles were conventional hybrids or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 2,408 units (+76.5%), followed by pure electric vehicles or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) with 165 units (+400%), and plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 107 units (+84.5%).

One element that Morisaki highlighted is that, within the participation by technology of low-emission vehicles, is that conventional hybrids are the most preferred, although their participation has been reduced from 93.75% in 2021 to 89.85% in 2022; while, pure electric vehicles have gained ground, going from 2.27% to 6.16%, while plug-in hybrids have remained at 3.99%.

However, the association points out that the results are still insufficient to approach the volumes marketed in other countries in the region, leaders in this segment.

In Colombia, for example, sales of electrified vehicles totaled 27,845 units in 2022, according to Andemos, exceeding sales in the Peruvian market by more than 10 times. Thus, the penetration of these cars in Colombian territory stood at 10.6%, while in Peru this indicator stood at 1.5%.

The AAP’s Manager of Economic Studies considers that the figures show an encouraging outlook for the future, but it is still necessary for the Peruvian public sector to get more decisively involved in the expansion of electromobility, taking into account the positive impacts on society brought about by the renewal of the vehicle fleet.

A concrete proof that the participation of public policy is essential for the development of this market is Colombia, where, thanks to various incentives, they have managed to ensure that the sale of electrified vehicles has a more significant contribution to the age and quality of their vehicle fleet,” said Morisaki.
