How is the Electromobility Scenario in Costa Rica?

Through strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors, Costa Rica is accelerating its roadmap to massify electric mobility.

During the first quarter of 2023, Blink Charging announced the installation of 14 public charging points throughout the country, as a result of partnerships with local companies.

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) is another key player in the development of electromobility in the United States. The agency reported that it has invested two million dollars in the last three years in the installation of electric chargers.

In a report on this field, ICE Group is the public institution with the greatest contribution to this new mobility model and has been implementing supply points for more than six years.

Projections

For approximately 4 years, ICE has been estimating the growth of electric vehicles. If in 2019 the Ministry of Environment and Energy estimated at less than 1,000 existing electric vehicles in Costa Rica, in 2022 there were already 5,000.

In addition, ICE highlights that the commercialization of zero-emission cars represented 7% of the total, with 24 brands and 45 models available, in a proof of the dynamization of the market.

Currently, ICE and Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) are the only electricity distribution companies that have incorporated the corresponding fast chargers and that make up a network with the projected mobility, while the average autonomy of the units circulating in Costa Rica is 350 kilometers.

It should be noted that the Institute was a pioneer in incorporating GB/T chargers (for vehicles of Chinese origin), which allowed the growth of the national electric fleet.

After indicating that in 2022, ICE’s public chargers supplied close to 750 kilowatts/hour, the state entity refers that together with CNFL provide timely and diligent maintenance to its 67 fast and semi-fast chargers, and work to massify the equipment in hotels, stores, restaurants and open spaces.

In October 2022, it presented the subscription and charging platform “ES ELÉCTRICO” -available for Android and iOS systems-, which also allows knowing the availability of its chargers and the types of connectors, the location of the points and the distance between them.
