Mexico Increases Electric Vehicle Sales, Chile Suffers Fall

Sales of hybrid and electric cars in Mexico have grown significantly in the last year.

During January 2024, automotive companies in Mexico managed to market 7,442 hybrid, plugin hybrid and electric cars, according to figures published by Inegi (National Institute of Statistics and Geography).

This level of sales implied a 74.6% growth compared to the same month of the previous year, when 4,263 units were sold.

The Mexican Capital at the Forefront

The report highlights that Mexico City is the entity that leads the sales of hybrid and electric cars. The capital concentrates 25.8% of the total number of units sold.

The State of Mexico and Nuevo Leon complete the top three states with the highest consumption of the so-called green vehicles. During January, they registered sales of 928 and 703 units, respectively.

At the other extreme, it was observed that in states such as Nayarit, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, Guerrero and Durango, sales of hybrid and electric cars do not exceed 40 units per month.

Fall in Chile

Unlike what is happening in Mexico, the automotive sector in Chile continues to be affected by the fall in the investment of companies and the lower liquidity of citizens in March, commercializing 23,525 units with a contraction of 37.4%, with respect to the same period of the previous year.

According to a publication by América Economía, this decrease is mainly explained by the fact that the comparative base is significantly high, due to the change in emission standards from EURO 5 to EURO 6b, which affected new light and medium-sized vehicles in March last year, resulting in the early registration and patenting of a large number of units that otherwise would not have been marketed.

Latam Mobility in the Region

Chile and Mexico are markets with great potential for sustainable mobility and electromobility, which is why Latam Mobility, the largest mobility community in Latin America, belonging to the Invest in Latam network, will be in both countries.

In August, Latam Mobility Cono Sur 2024 will be held in Santiago de Chile, where industry and public sector leaders will meet to discuss the prospects for mobility and sustainability in the region.

Meanwhile, in October, Mexico City will be the venue for the closing of the Latam Mobility 2024 tour for two days of networking, launches, among other activities with the aim of promoting the massification of electromobility.
