Peru Reports Historic Growth in Electric Vehicles

The Peruvian Automotive Association (AAP) reported that 408 electric vehicles were sold in December 2023 alone, 65.5% higher than the annual rate.

The guild specified that, adding up the background, 4,484 units were sold last year, reaching an expansion of 67.3% compared to 2022.

Alberto Morisaki, Manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the AAP, pointed out that 2023 ended with the highest number of units sold since records have been kept.

“In other countries, growth is much higher as a consequence of the promotional measures established by their governments to encourage the growth of this market and benefit their citizens,” he noted.

Key Aspects

The association explained that the increase is due to several factors, among them the greater offer by the concessionary companies, who have introduced to the market an important number of models of different brands.

Likewise, the local buyer is taking greater interest in contributing to the care of the environment, and as the vehicles contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution levels, in addition to significant savings in fuel use and vehicle maintenance, they are attracting more and more attention.

However, Morisakia noted that the penetration of this technology in Peru is still very low at 2.5%.

The Peruvian government published Supreme Decree N° 036-2023-EM, which approves the Regulations for the Installation and Operation of Electric Mobility Charging Infrastructure in the country.

The regulation contemplates a series of strategies for the country to massify electromobility and be one of the key players in the fight against the greenhouse effect.

The decree takes into account aspects such as technological facilitation by establishing a clear regulatory framework that encourages the introduction of efficient transportation technologies, essential to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons.
