Power Electronics to Adopt NACS Connector

Power Electronics joins the ranks of manufacturers and large companies that are adopting the North America Charging Standard (NACS) connector line of chargers.

The move, which will begin to be implemented in 2024, aims to continue driving the mass adoption of electric vehicles around the world. In addition, the strategic decision responds to the growing demand for more versatile and efficient charging infrastructures, as well as recent developments in the automotive industry.

Used since 2012 as Tesla‘s exclusive connector, it was in 2022 when its patent was released and gave rise to the NACS standard.

Its prominence has been growing in the electric vehicle charging landscape over the last year, when major automotive manufacturers have announced the adoption of a standard present in more than 15,730 charging points across the United States.

The adoption of the NACS connector will also allow Power Electronics to expand accessibility to electric vehicle charging, which also underscores the company’s commitment to the evolution of sustainable mobility.

The Valencia, Spain-based manufacturer has always stood out for its work in facilitating a rapid transition to electric vehicles. A mission in which open standards and interoperability are key elements in order to achieve a robust and scalable electric mobility economy.

Connector Features

The major attribute of the NACS is that it is the same connector for both AC and DC charging, so much so that in the car there is no variation in the socket.

It is a much smaller electric car connector than the CSS1 combo and allows the hose to be unlocked at the push of a button (similar to SAE J1772). In a nutshell: it is more modern, better developed, smaller and therefore a winner over the existing connector.

The connector allows direct current loads of up to 400 amperes, its rated current being 200 amperes and up to 1000 volts. In alternating current it is 48 amperes.
