Sustainable Mobility: Uber Planet Reduces 109,000 CO2 Tons in Latin America

The cab service platform Uber revealed important figures regarding its sustainability strategy to reduce carbon emissions in its trips.

Through Uber Planet, an innovative mobility product that provides collaborating partners with a zero net emissions ride without forcing them to immediately switch to unaffordable and impractical vehicle technologies, the company has moved 22.5 million users and offset 109,000 tons of CO2 only in Latin America.

Currently, Uber has electric car projects in countries such as Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. In addition, they estimate that this initiative will be expanded in the short term in Costa Rica and Colombia. During the first half of 2022, more than 1,000 driver-partners of electrified vehicles have used the brand’s app in Latin America.

Goals Set

Uber Planet was born as part of the company’s commitments to mitigate climate change and adhere to the Sustainable Development Goals. The goal is to become a zero-emission platform by 2040, with 100% of trips in zero-emission vehicles.

Users who choose to ride with Uber Planet pay a small additional fee that is used to invest in carbon credits that offset the tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Working in Partnership

For George Gordon, Uber‘s General Vice President for Latin America, reducing emissions on trips not only requires an effort by the platform, but it is also essential to establish alliances with organizations and governments.

“Being a zero emissions platform is a challenge that goes beyond the actions of Uber, it is definitely a goal that we cannot achieve alone, therefore, we have initiated conversations with vehicle developers, governments and the community in general to find solutions together for this transformation for the benefit of the planet,” he said.

“We remain committed to sustainable mobility and believe that if cities support mobility platform partners with better conditions for them to switch to this technology, the overall transition to electric transportation could be accelerated,” Gordon added.

He pointed out that during the first half of 2022, more than 850 electric vehicles and 3,700 hybrid vehicles have used the Uber app in Latin America“.
