Tesla and Toyota Rule the Electric Car Market in 2023

Electric vehicle sales are already beginning to show results for the first half of 2023, a time in which Tesla is once again showing signs of its leadership in the global market.

The company’s Model Y crossover SUV was the best-selling vehicle in the world during the first quarter of that year. This was highlighted in a report by motor1.com, detailing that it is the first electrified car to score on a global scale.

The analysis of market data by JATO Dynamics shows that Tesla sold 267,200 Model Y crossovers worldwide during the first three months of the year.

The figure represents a 69% increase over the same period in 2022. The next closest was the Toyota Corolla compact car (and its international variants) which sold 256,400 units.

Market Movement

Beyond Tesla‘s lead in the top spot, Toyota has also had a prominent share of electric car sales with models in four of the top five spots.

After the Model Y and Corolla came the mid-size Hilux pickup (214,700 units), the RAV4 compact crossover (211,000) and the Camry midsize sedan (166,200).

Tesla sold 747,500 Model Y crossovers in 2022. That figure was a 91% increase over the previous year’s sales number, but it was only enough to take third place for electric vehicles in the year-end global sales rankings.

It was surpassed by the RAV4 (1.02 million units) and the Corolla (991,500). The year may not even be half over at this point, but Tesla‘s most popular model looks in good shape to finish as the world’s best-selling vehicle, especially given recent sales trends.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicted Model Y leadership. Last August, the electric vehicle maker’s CEO claimed that the crossover would become the world’s best-selling car by 2023.
