The Mobility Secretariat of Mexico City Launches “Latam Mobility: Mexico 2022”, Two Days of Mobility and Sustainability in the Aztec Capital

Mexico

Latam Mobility, the leading sustainable mobility community in Latin America, hosts the in-person meeting “Latam Mobility: Mexico 2022” in the capital of the Aztec country, with over 500 professionals and representatives from the public and private sectors, who will discuss mobility, transportation, renewable energies, charging infrastructure, clean fuels, mobility as a service and smart cities.

The meeting, which is being held on October 11 and 12 at the World Trade Center in Mexico City, was attended by Rodrigo Díaz, Undersecretary of Planning, Policies and Regulation of the Secretariat of Mobility of Mexico City, who was in charge of opening two days of discussions that will address the challenges, opportunities and plans that are being carried out in the different sectors of the country and the region.

Díaz explained that his administration is “settling historical debts with the peripheral areas of the city, where there has been less investment and where journeys are longer, more dangerous and unsafe, through three fundamental aspects: extending public transportation networks, improving modes, and integrating them.

Díaz indicated that they currently have two Cablebus lines that move 125,000 passengers; an elevated trolley, and they are working on a third line of the subway system that will allow greater mobility in the city.

He also indicated the relevance of mobility integration: “The city and its transportation systems cannot function in a fragmented manner, because it generates long trips and unnecessary transfers. This is what we are working on in order to close a decades-long gap”.

Key Points

One of the points indicated by the Undersecretary of Planning, Policies and Regulation of the Secretariat of Mobility of Mexico City, Rodrigo Diaz, was the importance of promoting the use of private bicycles, especially in areas where the trip starts.

“We extended the network of bicycle lanes and promoted massive and free events at Metro head-end stations to encourage intermobility. In central areas that attract trips, we have available the Ecobici public bicycle system, which will increase from 6,500 to 9,300 bicycles, and from 480 stations to 687,” Diaz explained.

The representative indicated that in the capital, two out of every three trips are made by public transportation and highlighted that it starts from a walk. “In the periphery it used to be done in places that were not very appropriate: unsafe and inaccessible, so the ‘Senderos Seguros‘ program was implemented, which consists of more than 500 kilometers of illuminated roads, with ramps and more accessibility, so that people feel safe at the end of their trip.”

Finally, Diaz said that “progress has been made to make the entire travel chain, not only in the displacement, but also when arriving at the destination, so that the trip is pleasant and accessible for users. There is still work to be done, but we are working on it”.
