This is How Electric Vehicle Sales Will Close in 2023, According to Study

Global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) increased by 20% over the previous year, according to a market study by UK-based Rho Motion.

BEV and PHEV sales reached a new monthly record of 1.4 million units, up from 1.1 million in November 2022.

Speaking to Reuters news agency, Data Manager Charles Lester explained that sales have continued to increase despite the inconsistency the market has presented.

Environmental Awareness

Francisco Medina, Manager of Electric Vehicles at Nissan Peru and Chile, said in a review by El Comercio that sustainable mobility stands as an imperative need in society.

“This approach seeks to transform our transportation systems to address various environmental challenges such as climate change, air pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. It even promotes social and economic inclusion by generating new employment opportunities and more accessible technologies for the community,” he stressed.

Globally, BEVs accounted for 70% of sales and PHEVs accounted for the remaining 30% in November, Rho Motion reported.

China saw a 25% increase in sales and they rose 43% in the United States and Canada, while in Europe sales fell 3% compared to the same month in 2022.

The drop in Europe reflects a strong finish to 2022, as Germans bought electric cars before a reduction in government subsidies went into effect, Rho Motion continues.

Lester said that while Germany is reducing its BEV subsidies and France is reducing its own subsidies-to favor European-made electric cars over Chinese ones-sales in Europe should remain strong because automakers will still need to meet emissions targets heading into 2025.

He added that France’s targeted subsidies “are going to have a bigger impact” on vehicles such as Renault‘s (RENA.PA) Dacia Spring , which is made in China for the European market, than on China’s BYD, because their cars “are just starting to be sold” in France.
