Transmilenio, Hitachi Energy, Metro de Medellín, Transdev, BYD and Enel X will Discuss Public Transport Decarbonization at Latam Mobility Colombia

The city of Medellin will host the outstanding physical event “Latam Mobility Colombia”, a meeting to be held on June 8 and 9 at the Orquideorama Botanical Garden, where representatives of the public and private sector will present their plans and strategies on interesting topics related to sustainable mobility, decarbonization, energy, among others.

One of the panels on the agenda will discuss the decarbonization of public transportation and bus fleets in Colombia, a forum that will include the participation of members of prestigious companies such as Transmilenio, Metro de Medellin, Transdev, BYD Motor Colombia, Enel X and Hitachi Energy.

It is worth noting that Colombia is one of the leading countries in the region in terms of electrification. Law 1964, passed in July 2019, highlights the need to add electric vehicles to the fleets that transport passengers in the country.

The regulation lists several incentives aimed at owners of electrified cars, including discounts related to the technical-mechanical and pollutant emissions review, preferential parking, and exemption from restrictions on vehicle circulation for environmental reasons, or due to vehicle congestion, such as pico y placa.

Transmilenio: A Success Story

In cities such as Bogotá, Transmilenio has been a national and international reference in the implementation of technologies with the best environmental performance standards and in terms of decarbonization.

The company has contracted more than a thousand battery electric buses, and that number is expected to increase significantly by the end of 2022. It is estimated that the operation of these electric buses will reduce about 94,300 tons of CO2 per year.

Metro de Medellín’s Contribution

In the 2021 report published by the transportation system, they highlighted that the positive impact of Metro de Medellín in 2021 is estimated at $3.79 billion.

In addition, in 2021 they avoided the emission of 420,011 t of CO2, an economic benefit valued at $198,439 million. Likewise, commuters saved a total of 165.76 million hours in the year, a benefit estimated at $569,231 million.

The Transdev Experience

The panel on decarbonization of transportation in Colombia will also be attended by representatives of Transdev, one of the leading companies in operations and integration of global mobility for passenger service.

With extensive operations in Colombia, Chile, Brazil, among others, the company will bring all its knowledge on route planning, chargers, batteries and all the comprehensive projects they have managed.

BYD Pioneer

The presence of members of this Asian company gives even more prestige to the meeting organized by Latam Mobility. In 2021, BYD celebrated a significant milestone, bringing its 1,000,000th electric car off the production line, to become one of the first new energy vehicle manufacturers on a global scale to reach this number of electrified passenger vehicles.

Enel X Leads Colombia’s Decarbonization Efforts

This year, Enel presented the study Roadmap for the Energy Transition in Colombia. This research was developed by the Regional Center for Energy Studies (CREE). This strategy seeks that the different actors contribute with recommendations to meet the goals set for 2030 and that, finally, we reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Italian group is actively contributing to electric mobility projects, such as the supply of energy for the first line of the Bogotá Metro and the assembly and adaptation of six recharging yards that will enable the operation of 878 electric buses of the Integrated Public Transport System (SITP) as one of the references within its entire operation in the country.

Hitachi Energy’s Contribution

According to company information, they are highly committed to decarbonization on a global scale, combined with energy growth that they estimate will double by 2050.

In January 2022 Hitachi Energy announced that it achieved the first goal of its Sustainability 2030 plan: the use of 100% fossil fuel-free electricity in its own operations. The company is moving toward carbon neutrality in its activities by 2030, in line with its aim to promote a sustainable energy future for all.
