Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi kicked off the sales launch of its long-awaited electric vehicle, which will sell from US$29,870.
The company’s CEO, Lei Jun, said that the shift from electronics to car manufacturing had not been easy and noted that US rival Apple had abandoned the idea.
He explained that in the three years of developing the car, what he has realized most is that making them is extremely difficult. “Even a giant like Apple gave up,” Lei said during the launch.
“So today, every person who continues to persevere in car manufacturing is a hero of our time,” said Lei, who compared Xiaomi’s SU7 with Tesla and Porsche’s electric vehicle models, and highlighted its advantages, including its minimum range of 700 kilometers, which exceeds the 567 kilometers of the Tesla Model 3.

Target Achieved
The launch fulfills an ambition of Xiaomi founder Lei, who announced the company’s foray into electric vehicles in 2021, pledging to invest $10 billion in its automotive business.
The company formed a partnership with state-owned automaker Baic Group and unveiled the SU7 sedan, short for Speed Ultra 7, in December.
The standard model of the SU7 EV will be priced at $29,871, while the Pro and Max versions will cost $34,022 and $41,368, respectively.
Deliveries of the Standard and Max models will begin in late April, and those of the Pro models in late May.
