IUSA Electromobility Revolutionizes Transportation in Mexico

Grupo IUSA, a leading Mexican company operating in the electricity and telecommunications sector with more than 80 years of history, is consolidating the objectives set out to continue on the path of sustainability with the IUSA Electromobility division.

Following the announcement at the Latam Mobility Summit held in 2020 that the company would venture into an important sector to protect the environment and offer solutions to Mexico’s congested traffic, the firm presented an excellent line of hybrid and electric vehicles that are now a benchmark in the market.

Why was the Division Created?

IUSA launched this division following the trend and behavior of the automotive market and recognizing the transportation difficulties in Mexico, where poor air quality represents a serious public health and environmental pollution problem.

For the company, electromobility is a cross-cutting issue, as it is included on the 2030 agenda for the protection of the ecosystem, and supports 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the Paris Agreement.

More than 80% of all cities have pollution levels that exceed the limits set by the World Health Organization regarding air safety. Electric vehicles are easier to operate and require less maintenance, so even with a higher purchase cost, the cost of ownership is lower.

For IUSA Electromobility, being part of this revolution not only helps the planet, but also benefits the population and promotes technological innovation, elements that can be considered key to society.

The Mighty Balam

Among the electrified proposal, one of the most important cards is the Balam, a 100% electric public transportation bus that can carry up to 40 passengers. It has a range of 200 kilometers (km) per battery charge and reaches a maximum speed of 100 km/h (62 mph).

The assembly of this vehicle began with the company’s partners in Asia, but gradually a technology transfer process has been carried out to be manufactured in Pastejé, State of Mexico.

Other features of the Balam include noise and emissions reduction through smooth and stable braking operation. It is armored safety with the electric drive system design, maintenance costs are low, since brake pads and clutch disc have a long service life. In addition, the bus has a 3-year warranty.

For IUSA, transportation has changed and Balam represents the vision of this new branch of the company with inclusive, efficient, comfortable and environmentally friendly operation.
